mental surfing dry spell..

Postby greg@hoodatsurfco » Fri Mar 14, 2008 10:38 pm

i dunno what it is.. i know i am certainly not losing interest in surfing.. just the thought of it makes a bad day good.. but lately i have not had any ambition to go out.. i live about 45minutes from the water so that could certainly be apart of it.. but I've been so unmotivated the last couple months.. I literally have not been out even once since the new years day.

I have been super stressed because I lost a pretty good job due to the company closing.. and one would think "well now you have tons of free time go out and rid that stress on the waves!" and that sounds great but im just not motivated to..

does anyone else go through these phases of lack of motivation to go out?

I am sure if I lived a few minutes from my break, it wouldn't be THIS bad.. but i dunno..
My mother, father, brother, sister and Aunt are all moving down to southern california and want my fiance and I to move with them.. i'd love to.. maybe thats what i need? warmer water.. haha maybe its the cold water that is making me lose motivation.. i know many of you surf cold waters.. but for some reason after surfing san diego in nothing but shorts, really makes you despise northern california!

no? haha.

this is the first time in my life i haven't had motivation.. xxxxx.. i used to drive 2 or more hours to goto santa cruz for a quick session.. now its like.. 45 minutes just doesn't seem to be worth it.

then again its been either huge, or crappy as far as waves go.. maybe thats got something to do with it.

sucks because I just got a brand new gary linden board. hybrid fish, it hasn't even seen the water yet!

have ben nasty ill this week and missed wicked conditions was gutted, still not topnotch and so no risking going out just yet, esp as i got a day ong interview next wednesday. anyway... nah.. and if you lived closer I think you'd find yourself getting more picky about what you'd go in for!

I'd put it down ot the time of year.. Feb/March, its the coldest dullest time... but its al set to change just round the corner!!!

yes

my local break is shitty for me, some people get on OK there and enjoy it. I have enjoyed it a few times also but when I go on my own I dont, it's only 20 mins up the road but even when the swell is on I end up writing and assignment or catching up with jobs around the house because I dont have the motivation to go

I reckon is I got off my bum and actually went I would be glad I did - the fact that it feels like an effort to do so seems like there's no point in going....its not sposed to be a chore after all!! Like you said - it's probably because you have surfed lovely conditions and now dont fancy the shite so much.

I have some time free bank holiday weekend in May, fingers crossed I'll find some fun again.

Motivation may be much like the tides......it ebbs and flows.

Bah I m in my finals week at uci... haven't surf for 3 weeks... life feel's pretty stressful... Can't wait till all these study's are over. I know college student doesn't compare to your real world, but just to let you know somebody is feeling ya. And yeah it takes 30 min to get to the beach so that's pretty pissing1 me off

I know on some days I get home and I am just so tired I want to lay down and take a nap. Days like that I will make myself get out into the water because I know it will wake me up and I will have fun. Force yourself to get there and once you are in the water you are glad you did.

Motivation? Never thought about needing motivation. The surf is there, if it's worth a go, I go. I'm just glad to be able to.

^^I guess motivation being, my spots are typically closed out and freezing. Im sick of the cold water. I love surfing, and don't think about the cold water when im out there but when im at home considering it.. its hard to wanna go out to a closed out wall of ice LOL.

My family is truly considering moving to southern california and i hope they do because then I will too lol..

And its not just the water.. or "surfing" in general that im not motivated to go do.. i just lack motivation in general right now.

sounds like depression dude... sorry to hear it!! used to suffer from it myself badly! not really sure what broke me out of it, but definitely woke up one day and just went f*** it.. gonna do something. a move might be just what you need! in the mean time really try to make an effort to do it. its things like surfing that'll get you through it. but you have to let it. endorphins work like nothing else to beat depression. main thing is to not feel sorry for yourself. that is the mind killer.

live over 2 hours from any decent surf and find that even a couple hours of floating around on a surfboard away from it all is good for the soul. or if the surf is really bad just go fishing or something. if you weren't depressed then cold water wouldn't even enter your mind.

anyway dr phil moment over... chin up old chap.. here's wishin you some good waves soon!
