advice/ ideas/ suggestions wanted

Postby thaya » Thu Jan 03, 2008 8:08 pm

I was going to write the subject as "epipen advice wanted" but I figured that actually people with no knowledge may still be able to help...

To cut a long story short, last year I experienced my first anaphylactic shock. It was caused by some tablets I was given. I was ok afterwards and thought it was just a one off thing. Then, over the last two months I've gone into anaphylactic shock about 4 ot 5 times. The last time was even more scary as the first adrenaline shot I got in hospital didn't work like it usually does and I had to have another one.

So, I was told to make sure I always carry an epipen around with me but here's my problem - I've broken it already

See - in the large carboard case it's too big to fit in my normal handbag unless I take it out and just keep in it's thin plastic tube

Image

I left it in the bottom of my larger handbag, but with the weight of everything on top of it (or maybe I stood on it by accident???) , the plastic broke and I had to get a new one.

This is what it looks like without the carboard box it comes in.

I've had a look on the net to see if anyone makes a sturdy (but small) case specifically for it and I can't find one - only giant plastic boxes to keep it at home (not much use if you have any allergic reaction while you're out!)

So, (finally!) my question is - can anyone think of any specific hard but light case I could get for it, or know anyone who has the same problem and owns what i'm looking for?

I just thought I'd ask :) My doctor told me to "be more careful" with it  I guess now I know how delicate it is, I will be, but I'm still on the look out for a case to protect it.

Any ideas welcome! :D Thanks!

All I can think of is to get a piece of PVC (plastic plumbing) pipe that is just large enough to keep the plastic case in, as it will give it a little more protection than just the flimsy plastic case that it is currently in.
Take care.

How long is it? - This might do the trick - a hardshell pencase 8cm long 6.5cm wide and 4cm deep. I don't need it (i got loads since i sell pens) so you are welcome!

thanks flyingvee - the epipen is around 6 inches long though.

SDCali - I will probably end up trying that idea if all else fails. Might check out my local hardware store for some inspiration.

It's frustrating. You'd think someone would manufacture something, but all I've found on the net are huge american "fanny bags" for kids epipens or else knitted socks (rather like those for surfboards!) which look pretty but don't actually stop it from breaking or boxes which are far too large to put in a handbag.

I suppose I can ask next time I'm at the allergy clinic, they might know.

Just thought someone out there may have a good idea or know where I can find one!

PS - If anyone goes into business to produce this thing and makes millions, remember who gave you the idea

Hi Thaya, what you want is a hard case for a small musical instrument. Musical stuff is very fragile, and when on the road it gets some rough treatment, so the cases are very sturdy, even the cheap ones are pretty good.
I would think a case for a piccolo (small flute) or a harmonica would be ideal. The lining is usually made of foam covered in a nice soft fabric like velvet.
Maybe there is a decent musical store near you, or maybe you could look online. I don't think that my idea is as cheap as some of the above, but what price your safety??

thanks for that. The whole problem is that I want something that just slips over/around it so i can actually carry it around. the first one still looks too big to put in a handbag, but great for storing one at home.

the second one is exactly what I've been looking for! Perfect! I'm going to get one shipped over from Canada straight away... It still works out cheaper than the english bulky black box and it's the perfect size to keep in a handbag!

Thanks to everyone who pm'd me too

see - this is what i was looking for!

as opposed to a weird looking bum-bag
Image

a knitted sock which wont prevent it from breaking (and looks quite dodgy!)
Image

a soft pouch for kids
Image

or even worse - an epi-puppy  !!!

*edit* have now ordered it. should be here withing 2 weeks. problem solved.
