What is an O'Neill Gooru 3/2?

My freind has introduced me to surfing, I've got me a T&C Thruster and a nice O'neill Gooru 3/2 full wettie this weekend; thruster S/H £150, wettie new £70. What I want to know is: what is the spec of the O'neill? There is no mention of Gooru on the tags and I can't find any info on the net, is it suitable for this end of the year:?: , I live in Portsmouth if that helps.

ummm... i always thought that the Gooru was a spring/summer suit if it is 3/2. you will probably find it too cold for that suit right now. you might also want to get some boots, gloves and a hood (to prevent getting 'ice-cream head') cos it's damn freezing in the water this time of year!

:oops: Thanks for the response. It is a 3/2 full size wettie but all I can find on the interweb is indeed spring suits and rashes. Too cold huh, dang it! I must surf, mebe I'll just give a go, you know, just to see. I shall let you know how I got on :wink:

Hi Blindorange, welcome to Surfing Waves.

I'd not heard of a Gooru wetsuit before but have had a quick look on the O'Neill website and there are 'Gooru' items in the waterski section - so you are all right - it's not a fake!
freaky_welsh_chick is right, it is a spring/summer suit and you'll need a warmer suit for the depths of the English winter.

I hope you keep the good job on the forum, i have never seen a moderator that helps so much, organises things (like the topic) and does not complain all the time about these mistakes we users make...

here in brasil a 3/2 wetsuit is a winter suit
:P

but i guess that is not the case up there in the cold cold

does it make a big diference having a 3mm or 5 mm wetsuit?
is it a small dif. or a big one?

does wearing a full wetsuit when it is not that cold make you too hot?

sorry it the questions are stupid, but soon i´ll be buying one and i never enen put one on

wearing a winter wetsuit in the summer is BOILING its horrible. i dunno bout your other questions but i know that one, lol.

I agree leolivi!! You speak for all of us!!

Um 5mm is 2/3 more protection! If you were jumping off a cliff 30m high, then went to a 50m high one do you think it would be much different?! Probably :P

Since you don't need that much to keep you warm [3mm isn't really a lot of protection] i think there is quite a big difference between a 3mm and a 5mm!!!

Anyway, 5mm is for real cold!!! 3mm is for non dancing about in your surf shorts weather!!!

Darn it, looks like I've bought a suit I can't wear for a few months then. Can't afford another one. D'you think it's worth a try anyhoo? I won't be on my own in any case so if I freeze at least there'll be someone there to drag me out if need be. I found my suit at

i personally would try it, seeing as it is a full suit, it will take the edge off the cold water. i don't know if that's sensible advice though, sorry! try just like 45 mins in the water. just make sure you don't stay in if you are shivering uncontrollably, or are going numb and turning blue!!!

hi i had a look at the website in english. It does say tropical cold which is slightly nicer than english cold.
Plus i had a look on the english oneill website but could not find a full gooru suit, although the shorty gooru did say it had breathable seams. that means that youll be getting more water in your suit than if they had been glued and stitched or better taped, which aint good for english waters.
i have an oniell 5/3 heat plus boots,gloves, hood and surf up north like, i went in on sunday and only lasted 1.5hrs but it is much colder up here
Can you not take it back and get another for slightly more money. It will make your surfing experience much more enjoyable plus your will get better quicker because you can spend longer out

Hey Kieran,
unfortunatly, due to the nature of the sale (I got £50 off) it's non returnable, plus I wanted to get as best a suit as possible rather than buying a cheapie 5/4 that wouldn't last. My mate surfs in a 3/2 - blindstitched, however his blood is thinner than the cheeky girls and feels the cold real quick but manages a couple hours. I dunno, gunna have to suck it 'n see I guess. Usually the solent is slightly warmer than northern climates at the moment surf reports suggest a temp of around 10 - 12C.

Well i suppose if your mates surfs a 3/2mm and seems fine then you might aswell give it a go. You have not got anything to lose and a lot to gain
You are right about getting a quality made suit. My oneill has lasted pretty well up to now.

Why not give it a go, if you get cold,...then get out!!

Persoally i think you are a bit mad to try surfing in winter in england [its cold everywhere] in just a 3/2. Probably worth giving it a go though,...i feel the cold quite a lot anyway!

Oh and surf patrol doesn't really like having links to outside sites in the forum :D So if you can, you should do links like this:

I have been putting in real links, only to read that surf-patrol was trying to minimise them! It'd just save him some work if we did it this way! [then he doesn't have to change them himself]

Well today I went out for my first time, fairly warm day around 13C with sea temp about 5C and my wettie was toastie! I was learning to surf for about an hour without so much as a shiver but the waves were all mushy so learning to pop up was a prob, but I did learn Duck-diving straight away weee! : )

Thanks Freaky, I was so chuffed with myself but man were my arms aching, must get fit.

As of now my eye is always on the tidetable, can't wait for my next outing I may find that I get a spell of 24 hour bugs that coincide with sunny high tides ;)
