I just have to say I'm the proud dad of a brand new surfer. My 7 year old son (the middle one) is my first to accept my offer to teach them to surf.

I had him standing by his third wave (well, whitewater).

Some interesting notes:

- small kids do better on smaller boards. The longboard and even the 6-8 where too much board for him to control/handle. He did fine on the 6-4, and we're looking at a 5-6 for his first board.

- even properly centered/sitting far enough back they tend to nose dive. I have to work on the tendency to not lean back a bit when the wave picks you up, then lean forward after standing up

- if they have a big wipeout and want to take a break, have them take one easy one in before letting them go; half the time, they say they don't need the break and charge the waves again.

It is great to be able to surf with your kids. My kids surf with me at least twice a week.

In regards to the Pearling (nose diving), If you are pushing them into the wave some times the way you push them causes this to happen. Try psuing them at a angle and pushing donw on the tail as you push therefor bringing the nose up.

Good luck and have fun.

My eldest (10) is now out back in anything 3ft and under.

Your middle son is a show-off. (Now I wonder where he got that from.) I can't even imagine actually standing up yet, myself. :P

But seriously, he's got it in the genes and I bet it's a great feeling to "pass it on". I'll bet he's geeked to be out there - with you.
