Can anyone recommend any locations for an oldie (40ish) and son(12) to camp and surf at weekends (we are beginners)...
Ideally a campsite close to a beach, board rental, and a good pub/social scene. South coast, Devon, preferable...
Am I asking too much at my age?

.
Thanks in advance...

lobb fields, just outside braunton in north devon is good, is quiet and i think theres board rental, its about 3-5 mins from saunton sands which is a great beginer beach. iv stayed here acouple of times and its been great and only a short walk to all the surf shops if you get bored

Ruda campsite at Croyde in north devon is practically on the beach. they rent boards out and have reasonably good facilities. i've only been there a few times, but it seems to be a mixture of surfers & families and I'd go back there again (out of season when it's not so expensive!).

You can always come over to Wales and visit the gower - it has some of the best beaches and scenery. Llangennith would be good for you and your son to camp. Its very popular during the summer but the beach is so big (3miles) theres enough space for you to learn to surf. Has a shop, cafe, a nice pub close by and a shop to buy/ rent boards and equipment. They also offer surf lessons and everything..

A book thats good is Surf UK which is fairly cheap (im not getting paid to say this lol). Tells you all the surf spots in the UK and what facilities each one offers, if you can camp there, shops..etc and which ones have rips, which are the safer beaches..etc
