Oddball question (where to put car keys while surfing?) :-)

Postby Wakka » Sun Jan 07, 2007 8:04 pm

Hi all,

I'm a new surfer. I took several lessons a few months ago and i'm ready to buy my own board and get out there 8) My oddball question is, where do you put your car keys when you go surfing? I was thinking ziplock bags and keep it in a zippered pocket, but i'm not 100% comfortable with that. I was also thinking a magnetic box hidden under the car, but again, not fully comfy with that. Any tips and thoughts would be appreciated!! Thanks! :D 8)

i use the key pocket on my leash. its secure while its on my leg and if i lose my leash ill be more worried about me than the car. make sure you're key is ok to go i the water though.

I have a key pocket on my boardshorts that works pretty well.

I always hang my key round me neck using a webbing key strap thingy. Hang the key down my back so im not lying on it when im paddling. N.B. All my surfing is done wearing a wetsuit. Not sure i'd be doing this without a wettie on!

I bought this little waterproof bag in this camping store for £7. I just put my keys in that and wear it under my rashvest or wetsuit..

I' ve got a key pocket under the zip of my 3/2 wettie..but not on my new 5/3 :x . So lately i've been pushing the key up the the sleeve of my suit, so it's held on the inside of my forearm.

I don't think it's a great idea to keep doing this, so i'm probably gonna get one of those 20 quid combi lock key safe things, and lock it to the tow loop of my car.....any one use one?...are they strong enough?

With KS on this one, even if you have one of those electronic thingymajigs
you can get a normal one cut that don't have all inherent problems attached. Also rub a little wax on the key to stop rusting.

I do the same - hang the key round my neck.

I forgot my non-electronic key once so hid the key in my exhaust pipe......I was so worried about my car and everything in it getting nicked I was only in the water for 20 minutes before I had to get back to the car, the next time I forgot it (yes I do have a few memory issues!) I hid it on the beach which wasnt so bad....still not ideal tho.

Wow, thanks for all the great replies!!

Not sure if i really want to bring the keys into the water with me (especially since i have electronic fobs on them). I'm thinking of purchasing something like this: http://www.lockhouse.com/Supra/keysafe_auto.html

or actually, this may work even better since i could lock it onto the cars frame (where the tow hooks are). It would be somewhat hidden too and not tso obvious like the window lock box: http://www.lockhouse.com/site/keysafe.html#push-button

Wish i had a hitch. This would be perfect: http://www.lockhouse.com/site/hitchsafe.html

I would, but the issue is my car doesn't have keys. It uses an rfid type electronic fob to open the doors and start it up. If all i had was a metal key, then this would not be an issue

Most Mercs are like that now.

In answer to the title of the thread, I have to suggest what loads of people must have thought.

Bend over and I'll show you! :D
