Hi there I have a 6'3 thruster and I bought a 7'2 funboard last year for the summer waves but unfortunately the mini mal has been broken up in a recent accident so I need to get another board for the small swell.
I am around 5'10 and weight just above 150lbs and I am planning to buy a 5'10 twin fins fat fish. I want to know how is it compare to my previous mini mal in catching the small summer waves? Thanks in advance mates

It will catch waves way easier/early than your minimal! Be prepared for a surprise when it takes off!

Thanks KS for the reply. Well I really love the mini mal when the waves get down to 1-3 feet as it becomes super hard if not possible to get on my 17.5 wide thruster, I think I will even love the fish more if what you said is true

Yea there is a epoxy fish from my local shop, I am not sure the brandname but it got a spade logo on it. I never ride an epoxy before but I think its a better choice given the overly crowded beach in the summer.
Or do you have any recommendation on the board ?

I'm thinking of a fish as well for the same reasons you mentioned. I borrowed a 18 inch wide thruster a few weeks back, tried to surf 2-3 footers and couldn't catch a single wave. Evertime I thought I had one, I'd go to popup and the board sunk down and the wave passed under. Is it really true that a 5'10'' fish...say >22 inches wide > 2 1/2 inches think can catch more waves than a minimal or funboard (say 7-8 footer range same width and thickness though)? If so I'm sold on getting a fish.

Hi Bub I just had my 2nd day with the fish, from my 2 days exp. I would say it catches waves way better than a thruster but not as good as a funboard... yet ( I still need time to adjust). One thing to mention is with the shorter length, the board is quite unforgiving in the sweet spot, it is alot harder to catch waves if you accidentally lie an inch back on your board. Oh and you don't need as much pump as a thruster once you get on it.

Thanks for the input. I figured with the shorter length of a fish, there is much less room for error as far as getting your feet into the sweet spot. An inch or 2 too far forward and your nose diving. An inch or 2 too far back and the nose will pop up too much and the wave will pass under you. How is your paddle out and duck diving ability on your new fish? Can you slice right through the waves easily or do you get knocked around some or knocked backwards.

Hi Bub, 3 days in a row with my fish now, thou the fish has abit more float than the thruster but somehow i found it easier to duckdive, but I have to tell you i hv never been a good duckdiver so you might want some input from other experienced members here. Overall I would say for my skill the fish serve me better than my thruster, except when the waves get hollow / steep.

yeah dude, when I get better at carving waves I definitely need to get a fish to rip up some of the small sloppy surf we get this time of year, maybe next year...around this time. Have a 6'10'' short right now but on sloppy waves its hard to get out of the whitewater and onto the face on sloppy days.
