hey guys

first of all hello!
i'm new to this forum but ive been checking it out for some time..

i'll introduce myself... I'm Jeremy, 20, i live in sydney, australia, cronulla is my local beach.

I learnt to surf on a great 7'4 funboard, and ive been at it for around 9 months. im good enough to do some simple turns and get on the face and all of that.

I recently picked up a 6' short board for free, it was damaged so i did the repairs and its really pretty good. i think i spent $30 AUD on it in total (including legrope)haha so its not a bad investment. its pretty wide, i dont know the measurements - they arent on there.. but its nice and light and best of all cheap as!

what i was wondering is... what do u guys think about a 5'10 guy riding a 6' board? i was reading an article on the website that said the board should be at least 6 inches longer than you are but is that for guys who are just starting out?

dont worry about the 6 inch rule, that applys more when your starting out. im 6 foot 4 and i can ride a wide 6 foot surfboard no problem, and with the experience you have you should be able to surf it no problem. just dont expect it to float you as well, there might be a learning stage where its difficult to stand up, but youll get it an appreciate it. enjoy.

thanks mate.

cant wait to take it out again, i took it out a little while ago and found that there is a big difference between a 7'4 and a 6'. so i'll just have to get used to it.

will deffo take some getting used to, that is quite a large step down, however it is easily rideable! if you can't surf it, i'd keep it anyway and surf the 7'4 for a while longer and just stick with it

the length of the board is really irrelevant. boards come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. so do people. more info is needed because what you gave is really vague

for instance if it was a 6' board, but had a full nose and was thick and wide then it would be really easy to get into waves but be a bit harder to maneuver than a 'normal' thruster. on the other hand, if it was really thin and narrow with a pointy nose then you would be getting in to waves later but have a bit more maneuverability. also your weight has to be factored in. the above can easily be nullified if you were 210lbs

anyways most people now a days recommended a shortboard that is 2-3" more than your height (assuming its a typical shortboard, your skills are intermediate, and you are not crazy overweight)

anyways, ill just assume that you are normal and say you should be fine

you'll be fine, i'm the same hight and my board is the same legth, i also have a 6'2" but i much prefer my 6 footer.
