"Surf people"

So I noticed recently there has been a couple of typical surfer stereotype threads i.e. surf jewellery made of shells and dreadlock questions, all very hippy-at-one-with-nature conforming. I want to know who is the furthest away from living the “surfer” lifestyle which non-surfers believe we all live, (does that make sense?).

Okay, so I’ll start off.

I live in a flat in a city, drink starbucks coffee, stay in hotels when I go on holiday, listen to techno music, don’t have long hair, have a car that you couldn’t sleep comfortably in, play Nintendo, am a respected government official, watch dross on TV even if it’s sunny outside, think dream catchers are stupid, don’t bake my own banana bread and only call close friends “dude”.

Come on! Who’s less “surfer” than me?
:P

I live in London, I work for a bunch of dodgy west london boys in the gambling industry, I'm a skinhead (at the moment) I love drum & bass, I'm heavily into martial arts and I'm a member of the reserve forces (4 PARA)

Is that un-surfer-ish enough for you? :D

I did live in a city, but then moved to the countryside 3 years ago and am now moving to the beach in a couple of weeks :D I have long hair (but then I am female!) and shell necklaces, I live in flip flops from feb-nov, I'm totally skint most of the time and I'm finding ways to make my tiny car more comfortable to sleep in on surf trips!!! Maybe I half-fit the stereotype... after all I have to hold down a job as a responsible teacher   and I listen to loads of different types of music, including techno, and couldn't live (very easily) without being hooked up to the net!

LOL - 'real surfers'.... that's a bit subjective really..........

Having owned quite a few VWs, I've seen more than my fair share of the 'hippy types' - thing is, most are in it purely on a weekend basis, going back to their city type lifestyles for the rest of the week......they are far more vocal about the whole tree-hugging thing than the actual hippy types, who tend to just get on with things and not feel the need to shout about it.......

As for me, ex Forces, done my little bit in foreign parts, love rock music (but will listen to anything other than dance - I don't get dance music AT ALL!), don't tend to 'dress the part' as I don't want to look like a kook and currently working for the 'sharp end' of the NHS whilst trying to get the business off the ground...........oh, and I sold my Splitty coz I needed something more reliable to get to the beach, hence I run around in a big Korean people carrier!!

No - don't think I fit the general stereotype......... :D

Elusive Fox you are in the lead so far!

UNLESS....................................Your time in the reserve forces is similar to the surfing scene in Platoon, then you're straight to the bottom of the pile ya surfing conformist ya! :D The same applies to you Surf-Inno!!

Thaya - you sound like a "surfer" whose having to live in the real world, having a job, even worse a responsible job, I know how that feels.

I hate the enviroment, i drive an suv, i throw my trash all over the place, i only surf cause girls like it and it makes me look cool, i ride popouts which i guess arent very "core" surfer, i walk over the dunes to get out there easier, i only surf when its warm and i got nothing else to do, all my friends are jocks. dont listen to gay surfer music, only rap and hip hop. also i like to take big craps on dolphins and other sea life.

actually, I lie. One word springs me mind, hoving into view like a doomed iceburg, glittering crystaline in its purity of cause and function. A word that sums up in perfection the ethos of who we are dealing with here, there is a word for this man, and this moment, and the word is c*nt.

Lets see...Grew up on a farm. Currently live about 400 miles from the closest ocean. I am in the infantry(no I have never been helicoptered in to surf in veitnam[yet]). Own a pop out(again, aparently that lessens my surfer-ness). Listen to Country, dance, and almost all types of rock. A solid day for me is either chillin with my friends(not one can or has ever tried surfing), playing video games. That or cycling.

How am i doing so far?

nah dude i made up everything in that post. in reality i love the outdoors and the enviroment, i drive a little toyota, i surf everyday i can no matter what, i hate popouts, i love jack johnson, im really laid back. i thought the bit about wanting to crap on sea life would let people know i was kidding lol but i guess sarcasm is difficult over the internet.

I guess i'm pretty unsurfy but i've only been doing it for a year.

I live in a flat in Exeter and drive a bit of a gas guzzler of a car but only cause i like to go quickly. I surf a pop out board at the moment but thats cause its the only thing i can stand on.

I really dislike all the branding thats associated with surfing altho do have a couple of o'neill t-shirts and branded wet suits

Oh and as far as work goes i'm a techie... attached to a computer most of the day and its all a bit boring.

Oh, and i think Blair and Bush arent all bad either

I'm probably middle of the road.
I have really short hair, although it used to be long.
I drive an '01 reg 2.3L salloon car with leather seats and air con that will do 142mph, although used to drive a '72 VW camper.
I'd be lost without the internet, my computer and all sorts of electronic/digital toys.
I like a very wide range of music but 'surfer' music is low on the list, D'n'B, breaks, and house of most types are high on the list.
I can't play a guitar, but I have 3 keyboards.
I work for the NHS earning a respectable income, but lived off the dole for years.
I do have a tent but haven't used it since 2002.
I live in a house 400metres from the beach with a garden with 2 ponds in it, although I'm probably going to get rid of them both.
I ride a shortboard in a really unlaid back manner.
I do call people 'dude' and say 'gnarly', but only cos its unusual round here and I think its funny, especially in a medical environment! If I lived in Newquay or similair I probs wouldn't.
I don't think I'm laid back cos I do get worked up about stuff sometimes and haven't smoked weed for 2 yrs now, but my nickname at work is Surf Dude and I have a rep for being almost too laid back. :?

Hahaha, I thought it was hilarious.....because it was a joke right?

I think I kinda fit it, don't try to but I get comments like, "why aren't you in cali right now?" like daily. But that's contrasted against a bunch of super-prep kids that don't do anything but drugs and alcohol.

I've got long blonde hair (only way it looks decent), play guitar, listen to anything that involves talent, have a car I can sleep in(not exactly eco-friendly), and do so, don't spend a dime when I'm actually at the beach surfing, completely self sufficent. Don't really wear the clothes, they're too expensive and a lot of them I don't think look that great. Go camping all the time. Don't smoke, never have. But lots of that comes from the backpacking background too.

But when it comes down to it I can only surf on the weekends. But after this weekend I was reminded again how much I have progressed, I've actually got some respect in the water, which is pretty vital where I am.

Hmm, I think I'm middle ground...

I drive 2 cars... a 2.5ton Nissan Patrol, that sucks down 30L per 100km (not sure the MPG conversion) and a Mazda MX5 (miata) convertible, which never, ever has the roof on... even in the rain... in winter... at night. I make up for my polluting ways by having the 4wd on LPG, which at least burns fairly clean, and by only driving it to the train station, to the beach, and for towing yachts around the country.

I'm a molecular geneticist, and do DNA screening for organ transplant patients.

I have longish hair, but that's because it keeps my ears warm, and I'm too busy to get haircuts often.

I tend to go to the beach wearing jeans, and always surf in a wetsuit, even in summer, and I wear surf-brand T shirts most of the time.

I like rock and rock/folk music like Powderfinger. Jack Johnson irritates me.

I want to save the whales, and stop Japanese whaling.

I spend more time thinking about my next opportunity to surf than I spend thinking about my next meal.

I don't like waves over 4ft.

That's 7-8 MPG.....hahaha, ouch.

What's gas prices looking like over there anyways?
