kitesurfing vs surfing

Postby tautologies » Tue May 08, 2007 9:56 am

So what do you guys think of kiteboarding...note that good guys now ride more or less strapless, on regular surfboard, or hybrid on surfboards with straps....often also unhooking...

Also...as a kiteboarer I would NEVER go in the surflineup. A rule of thumb here is that if there are surfers we don't go....period. Kiters takeup way too much space....my question is that I love riding waves..on a surfboard...if I use a kite I don;t have to paddle and wait...it is like a tow in...actually some of the boards I have look very much like tow in boards...

Just curious. I like both kiting and surfing...I'm happy if I am in the water...

A.

LOL, I see that from the avatar.

Now I can understand the surfers that have kiters in the lineup gets fed up...especially if the kiters are unsafe or steal all the waves....but otherwise wouldn't it be nice to tow into huge sets, and just ride the waves?

oh, and the photos are focourse chopped from a kite mag.

i would call riding a surfboard with a kite, kitesurfing and riding a board with straps kiteboarding, two completely different rides, once i get the funds, i will invest in a kite, but they are quite expensive

I would call kiting on land with an all terrain board (aka mountain board) kiteboarding and anything on water kitesurfing. But it's only a name.

As for kitesurfing vs surfing.
I think to say that if there are surfers in the line-up then you won't take any of the waves is ridiculous. Everyone has a right to take some of the waves, surfers, kayackers, stand up paddle boarders, kitesurfer and windsurfers providing that you don't hog them all which of course would be easy to do when your kitesurfing.

Also here in the uk (im not sure of the local conditions over on ohau) surfers and kitesurfers very rarely if ever end up in the same line-up becasue the conditions that are ideal for kitesurfing are not ideal surfing conditions. Also as i kitesurfer there are breaks i can access thatg surfers tend not to bother with. Not many places here where it is safe to kitesurf in offshore winds. It's one of the reason i love kitesurfing as it allows you to make the most of all conditions and wave riding in 3ft mush is great fun as is wave riding in double overhead!
I too love both as you get the best of both worlds and can spend much more time on the water but i have never been able to decide which is better.
Surfing head high peeling glassy waves or kitesurfing in 30knots crosshore and double overhead? Its a tough call on this one.

Kite Boarding(US), Kite Surfing(UK and other) & Fly Surfing(French) are all the same thing and are just different names used in different parts of the world to describe the sport as a whole, these names have not really been used to describe the different disciplines.

When kite surfing first started we used surfboard style boards at about 6 to 7 foot long, hence Kite Surfing then this progressed onto the large twin tip boards (169cm), then to small twin tip boards (120cm), then back to a twin tip boards in the range of 140cm.

Now however as the rest of the world goes retro made, the same is true for kite surfing and we are now seeing the come back of the original surfboard style boards albeit they are a little smaller nowadays.

If you want to separate the different kite surfing disciplines then it is usual to refer to riding waves as, wait for it…………………………………………. “Wave Riding”

Why not save all your money on buying kites, boards, and just generally kitesurfing equipment and buy a jetski? It might cost a lot of $$$, but you can have a lot of fun and you could rent it out to other people, make money off it etc etc.

also, i think the same kite can be used during the winter with a snowboard? so, if it is possible to snowboard with the kite, this would save a lot on lift tickets, anyone try it? possible?
