teaching others to surf

Just had my first taste of being the teacher and not the student.

My gf caught her first wave standing up yesterday after her third time out on my 7'8, and is stoked. I'm pretty impressed, as I kinda feel like I've helped her get to that stage, and along the way I've learned heaps about my own surfing, particularly about wave positioning and weight movements. It's like I understand my own instinctive movements better because I've taught someone else the basics of how to surf.

Anybody else had good (or bad) experiences trying to help friends get into surfing?

i tried to teach one of my mates to surf but its too hard because you want to go and just surf, but youve got to stick with your friend in the white wash.

it is indeed very tricky to not bugger off and surf when ur teaching a mate. i try and find days when its safe enough to get them out to the lineup. ive only done it a couple of times.

Good on yer Jimi,

I know its your GF and you have to do as your told!, but seriously, I often wish I had someone there giving me a helping hand and some pointers, whether I be out the back or in the wash. I guess it requires some patience but can imagine it could be satisfying.
