Surfing Waves

hi. im new to this surfing business and i have been told that it sometimes dangerous to surf at my local beach because the current will pull you out of the bay . can anyone explain to me what to look for in the water? the beach is dailmor on the isle of lewis if that helps.

If you use the search function and type in rips it comes back with many threads.
