virginia?! cmon man, i don't care how west you are of the ocean, that's only like 5 hours at the most, i bet. I sympathize with you, obviously, but a lot of other people have it worse. but anyway, a few things i can say is you just have to visualize in your head some of the very specific things you can remember about surfing.
a few days ago here in colorado the temperature was about exactly what it felt like a few times i went out in the winter in oz, or the color of the sunrise reflected on the ocean as i waited for waves, things like that. other than that, figure out when you're going to move to the coast again.
me, i better be in san diego in a year or so at most.
good luck with all that, too.

Hey man, I'm in VA too, and I know what it's like to drive 5 hours to find nothing but-----------------flatness................
But it's not that bad of a drive, you could probably get to VaB in like 5 hours. Except there's real no straight shot road from there is there......
I'm in Richmond, it's still a drive, but hour and a half in the winter isn't bad, so it's definately day-trippable, but it will take up all the day.
Also, you're pretty close to tech, I'm sure there tons of surfers there (with 26,000 people there have to be at least 100 that surf) you can hitch a ride with them or something. Hell, they probably have a surfing club you could get in with, I'm sure they'd be happy to have you along.

Funnily enough, Im in Richmond... its a five hour drive... or an hour and a half in winter to closer spots...
I'd say 'ha ha, mine's the original richmond' but as it happens, Richmond, London was named after Richmond, Yorkshire, UK...

Think of it this way. You scout out a good day on the web for VA beach area. Leave around 5am your in the water by 10am max. Surf til 3-4pm (thats 4-5 hr session) head home and in bed by 10pm. You'll be pretty exhausted but easily doable. Just get a good night sleep beforehand and be careful not to fall asleep at the wheel on your drive home.

Sleep in your car the night before, get up for a dawn patrol, do a good breakfast, surf, sleep, surf. Drive home. My best advice.
Good luck!
