Is this safe for a beginner?

I've gone out twice now with highest wave was almost chest high.

Surf report for today where I'm thinking about going around 11 is:

Surf................3 to 6 feet building to 8 to 12 feet in the
afternoon.

The swell direction and wind is all going good for the waves, but is this safe for me? This barely happens on the west coast of Florida! :)

erm 8-12 ft is double overhead + as far as im concerned so not really suitable for a beginner. is that the siz of the sur forecast or the size of the swell?

If in doubt, don't go out.

Its the surf forecast. Minimum chest high and will continue to build through the afternoon. I guess I won't be going out. All the broken neck talk scared me! :-p This forecast isnt from Surfline though as they just break down the region, so it might not be as credible but even surfline has region rated as chest high minimum.

Go.

If nothing else watch the pro's from the shore, you'll learn. If it looks OK go in, or just play in the shore break.

Take a camera...:D

Don't do it. You'll hurt yourself and others. Not worth it. However, as RJD pointed out, go and watch the pros or just simply mother nature doing its thing. Great for a mental surf and some meditation.

I'm not a total beginner anymore and I'd definately chicken out of 6ft+ surf. I wasn't game to go out on the weekend when it was 5ft and very full, so unless you're a really good swimmer/paddler you'll probably not have any fun at all. You might even get hurt.

... im still carrying the neck pain and clicking spine from a bad one last summer, dont play with anything that is knowingly beyond your ability...unless you have a liking for a pounding.. i kinda do but thats because the godz made me an entertaining human crash dummy for their own personal enjoyment lol

and trust me ..if your a learner you will learn far more from playing in waves that suit your abilities, i wasted two seasons messing about in waves that were simply too big to learn on ..im not much better now but at least i have had time in the shallows to learn pop-ups and such properly without waiting for the over head pounding to catch me whilst practising

p.s ... Dec : ... oh you said drive with my toes ?! .. i thought you said ho's !
