Shortboard for Longboarder

Postby Banana » Mon Apr 02, 2007 3:40 pm

I've been longboarding for years, but want to get a shortboard for the bigger days. I'm 5' 11", 167 pounds, intermediate level. I usually surf a 9' 8" Harbour Banana model.

The shortboard below is on Craigslist for $50 OBO. It's listed as "approximately 6' 7". Do you think this would be a good choice for trying out shortboarding at a good price?

Thanks!

That is a lot of downsizing, but maybe you can handle it. I have a longboard (9' Sakal) and a 7'6" funboard for bigger days. I don't have much trouble making the adjustments between those two.

Hey for $50 you ain't gonna lose. 8)

im going to wait to see what dbbb says first :D

Noo but seriously... that board is going to be a huge step down from a 9'8 longboard. I would suggest going for something atleast 12" taller than you to begin with anyway. If you want to start going down a few sizes a 6"10 ish funboard or say a 6"10 big boy shortboard might be easier to get use to.
It will feel a lot different, but if you have surfed for years on a longboard then you should be able to get use to a shortboard/funboard/mini mal

imo i'd go for something a bit bigger.

I personally don't care for glassed on fins. You break it, it's in the shop for a period of weeks... Go for something with interchangeable/removeable fins IMHO.

i only surfed my longboard for about a year and a half then got myself a 6'6" egg and iv found the transition easy, the first time i surfed the egg i could pop up easily and pump down the line. that 6'7" looks like its got alot of volume so it should be ok to change down to.

It looks like a nice board for only $50 (before shipping?). That 3rd picture from the top though...I'd be leary that the way they placed the leash in front of the fin isn't hiding a bad crack in the board though. I'm just always paranoid of "sight unseen" internet buys I guess, but again for $50 to get a shortboard in your inventory would be worth the risk.

It's a local sale, and I'm going to take a look at it today. The ad emphasized that it's "been well loved" so I'm expecting it to be worse than it looks.

Thanks for the advice!

Well, I saw the board and it had less volume than it appeared to in the photos, and it was delaminated in spots. So it was a no go. I'll keep my eyes open for something a little bigger.
