for a "safe" break i would stick to wolacombe or saunton which are a more mellow wave, (puts is good too but more expensive) croyde is a good beach but can be quite dangerous especially at low tide, with fast, steep waves, strong rips and gets very crowded.
For accomodation call the braunton tourist office on 01271 816400, they cover accomodation for all the beaches and surrounding areas and will give you more advice depending on if you wanna camp etc.

Johno, try googling BBs around barnstable, loads around and fairly priced, keep the money local.

oooh, I'm off to devon in July/August may be able to get a day or two surfing in.
I'll need somewhere to rent a board(longboard) & wetsuit(?), will be in a 911(borrowed), may have a softrack(may not) so prolly somewhere close to a break for rental?
Will be staying south Devon but North Devon is fine, will likely be going to Boscastle etc anyhow.

Surfing in a porsche? Tsk
Every well known spot in devon seems to have a rental shop on the beach these days - no worries there. Swell in july/august might be an issue though

It is looking fairly pi$$poor for the foreseeable
I dont think this weekend will be all that great either - short period and windy. Not quite sure where MSW is getting its four stars from
Looking like it'll go proper flat next week. Things might change. Um, but they might not
