I find taking off really late on a big set usually does the trick and gets them off

If its coming off, I'd get rid of it and get a new one. Peel it off which will leave all kinds of sticky rubbish behind and then use a bit of white spirit and a scouring brush to clean it up.

I personaly don't like tailpads. But the easiest way to remove them is with a hair blow dryrer. Just warm it up, and it loosens the adhesive so it comes right off. Just be carefull not to overheat the board. And if you want to re-install it, get some 3M spray adhesive and glue it back on. It won't stick as long as the original glue, but it might get ya by untill you can get another one.
