Surfing Waves

Hey, spending christmas in Fuerteventura. Hoping to get some sun and some NW swells

,
have heard that sea urchins are a bit of an issue...
Prob is, I don't have reef boots, a light pair of 2mm split toes and a more hardy 4mm pair, neither of which would do much against urchin spines.

Anyone out there have any experiences:

How much of a necessity are reef boots in Fuerte,
& would my surf holiday be up sh!t creek if I stepped on one?
What sort of damage can they do?

never been to above destination but when i have stood on an urchin before and had 6 nasty bits of spine in foot which had snapped off so it took a really really long time to get them out. Couldnt walk properly for about 3 days.

I think I heard someone here say that the rocks going out are sharp enough you're gonna need booties anyways.

I never saw any urchines while I was there but yes the rocks are sharp. Thoes boots you have will be ok but if you have sensitive feet get some thick soled ones.

If you do stand on a Urchin, one of the best ways to get the spines out is too Soak a bandage in olive oil, or get a bowl of olive and soak your foot in it. The olive oil helps to naturally draw out the spines.

I found this out in Turkey when I stood on one.

Pottasium sulphate paste gets the spines out aswell.

never encountered sea urchins, but had a problem with a mermaid once, it could have been so beautifull but her diet of raw fish put me right off!

I've spent several winters in Fuerte' and have never worn boots there and often stepped on sea urchins

. Really is no biggie, just treat 'em like a splinter, and take your time walking over the reef
