Board up, Board down.

Postby sunaroo » Sun Nov 26, 2006 11:25 pm

I'm doing some traveling with my boards and of course there are many differment thoughts about how they should travel.

So here is your chance to tell the world what you thank.

Question: What is the best way to carry your board on top of your car while traveling

i always travel with my board in the car. but if you have it on top i suggest you use a boardbag and have it bottom up, tail forward or else the air will stress the nose. if you have your friends with you, have their boards on the roof and yours in the car :D

i have these things that you put on the top of the car and then you put the boards on.
they hold well, stacking the boards the same way is better. Or else one with fins down and one with fins up. Remember, tighten the straps alot and watch out for the leash.
It was almost flying in the back of the car but it was in a little knot so it was ok.

Postby sunaroo » Mon Nov 27, 2006 11:15 am

so let's look at it like this, you and your budds are traveling on a surf trip. The car is full of sh*t and of coures your budds, so the boards have to go on top.

Part two of question: Fins up or Fins down :?:

Fins UP, at the FRONT of the car.

That way the curve of the board follows the curve of the car roof (so there's less board available to be hit by flying stones), and the fragile nose is kept out the way, and as a bonus the fins will stop the board coming off the car it it starts to slide backwards.

Surely though if you was to put fins up at the front of your car with the board in a bag you would have the thickest part in the wrong place due to drag, when using my missus weener mobile we normally have fins up over the rear of the car to aid airflow.

Aerodynamics come a long way second to protecting the board! :?

Maybe I should add that the board should be put quite a way backwards so that not much is overhanging at the front - partly to protect the board, and partly to improve the aerodynamics. And if you've got a big fin, you can pretend you car is a shark

but if you have a MEGA thick board bag and a sturdy board, would it really matter if the fins were at the back?

Was drinking beer in cheltenham this weekend

All that swell, and I spend the time in the pub

But it wasnt anything to get excited about - galeforce onshore winds, so there was a wave but not one Im particularly sad I missed out on!

Looking hopeful for this weekend! :D

Not a great deal, no.
But the point is that the board vibrates (a lot) at the front, and is prone to getting hit by stones thrown up from the car in front. So best to put the strongest part of the board at the front of the car. But seeing as a pop-out minimal is pretty much the same shape nose/tail, that probably wont matter. The fins will still hold the board in position better at the front though.

Ooh, just listen to me, going on about boards on cars, like I even do it anymore! :blah: :blah: :blah:

I always follow the instructions for the soft racks i use. They say face down fins up, nose at the front of the car. I've never had any problems this way and my board has been driven from Northumberland to Norwich a few times like this.....

Ive not got many shots of the inside... But now Ive got a camera again (Camera Thread) I can take a few shots. It might be a day or two (or more likely the weekend, when there's some daylight) but I'll post a new thread as you're interested 8)

The top should be face down. This will help keep your wax from melting on a hot day. The fin should be at the front of the car facing the sky. If the board slips though the straps the fin will be there to catch it.

A sturdy bag is a must.....

Take it easy......don't press the pedal all the way down and you should be fine.
