Is it easier to wax up at home, say a day or two before you surf, or will the wax loose its grip?
Cheers,
Will.

Get your base coat good at home.
Then top off with some sticky stuff before you go in.
Gives you a good excuse to watch the surf for a while before you go in... makes for a nice ritual.

Is the base coat just normal wax?

It varies, depending on your water temperature. But it's typically a coat of wax for a warmer water temperature.

Yeah, Ive got some Mrs Palmers Warm water wax. For this time of year I think cool water wax would be the top layer. So should I use the warm water wax for an all over basecoat?

you want to get either tropical wax, or proper basecoat wax. Putting the basecoat on is a pain as its really hard wax and can take a while, so i always do that at home, then top it of with a thin layer of whatever wax im using to make sure its grippy enough. Then i can just put some more normal wax on at the beach quickly before i go in.
Once thats all done i just leave the board in the bag at home and just whack a bit more on each time before i go in, until the next de-waxing-re-waxing time comes.
