i still don't appear to have to got the hang of putting enough wax on - it always seems to disappear after a short while and i spend the second half of every session wiping out more, cos i'm too lazy to walk back up the beach to put more on - do i need to put more on in the first place or just stop being lazy?!

also, i've looked through a couple of old threads on this matter and have noticed folks chatting about basecoat/layer (?) - not wanting to appear like a kook but I've never heard of this - is is why my wax keeps wiping off?

what wax are you using? im currently using sex wax (yuk) purple, for cool water. This is for breaks near Aberystwyth; so not too far from you . I give it a quick scrape with a wax comb and chuck a bit more wax on before each session.

The wax forms little 'lumps' if you put it on right

i'm using Mrs Palmer's cool water wax, it came free with the board, which i've only had a coupla months. I have been putting more on at the start of each sesh, and it did look lumpy but it still keeps coming off again - as do i!

with cold water wax you really should use base coat if you want it to be a solid wax job.

I have used Palmers and found it to go a bit 'soapy'

After a recommendation I am now using Zogs quick humps 3x cool to cold, it has a green label. Awesome results. No need for a base coat

Do not rub too hard when applying your wax, when I started surfing I rubbed really hard and the wax just peeled off when in the water

use sex wax red as a base coat if you are going too keep useing mrs p's there is a bit on the main site about putting on wax have a look at that

palmers is pretty crap (i find) and ive never been that impressed with it, im just changing now too cold water wax as my cool wax is too hard in the water now (i use zoggs). Maybe take some wax in with you so you can re-apply it in the water or use a better wax.

Im the opposite. I find zogs crap (especially cool water zogs which just doesnt work!). I think Palmers is great stuff! I always end up using Mighty Mounds which is Palmers basically but it creates smaller bumps for more traction and it smells better - works a treat!!!

a base coat is very usfull. the guy at the shop gave me a sticky bumbs tropical wax as a basecoat then a cold one. put the tropical one under, itl stay and help the other one stay on.

I keep a bit in the sleeve of my wetsuit.

I use a base coat of tropical wax. It is harder and sticks to the board better. Then I will put on the cool/cold water wax. The base coat seems to really help keep the cool/cold wax on the board better since the cool/cold water wax is so much softer. I have never used Palmers so I don't know much about it.

If your new to surfing then just wax the board up by applying a small amount of pressure to the block and basically put AT LEAST 1 whole block onto your board, i dont think you can have to much wax and dont worry if it looks rubbish as long as it gives you traction thats all that matters!

The secret is putting a base coat on in a very fine film on a completely wax free board. One block of base coat should be enough for 3 or 4 longboards. Best option I've found for the UK is Sex wax tropical base with Mrs Palmers top coat.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone! Will get my hands on some basecoat and see if that makes the difference...I'm sure it can't be anything to do with my 'impeccable' style and technique!
