No, bro, I don't agree.

I don't believe in the whole kook thing. Once someone has paddled out, they are a welcome grom as far as I am concerned.

As far as I am concerned Everyone is welcome in the line up. If I am out there and someone starts giving someone xxxxx just because they paddled out, I wouldn't allow it. Someone would either be shutting the hell up and letting the grom enjoy God's gift to us all, or someone would be getting thier ass kicked in the middle of the water.

& I don't see why a chick couldn't be riding a 5'2" in 5 months, why not, they are smaller than guys, usually, and maybe they are just natural born paddlers.

And, the whole thing about the guys in the line up not wanting to talk to these girls, uhhh, dude I will talk to them if you don't want to.

Not trying to crack on your comment bro, I understand the whole poser thing, I scuba dive and there are a lot of guys that have been diving for years and years longer than I have, but they never actually go out diving, they just sit around talking about it all day, kind of like me with surfing in the summer (no waves), that gets annoying because they think they know everything, but I have been on more dives than them and I can understand that, but someone just getting started in any sport is going to have a lot of enthusiasm, I love seeing that, it helps buld mine back up.

Alright, no offense by any of this bro, hope non is taking, just throwing out my opinion.

addicted, you're a psycho... end of story!

But seriously, don't stress about all these people bro! If they say they like surfing, then let them say so. It's not like they can steal your stoke cause they're fake surfers. In fact, you got one up on them cause they've never experienced the so called stoke! In fact I wouldn't call it stoke... I would call it fuzzyduzzywuzzygalsugar cause stoke is actually a boring word! I mean, seriously... who came up with STOKE! It's only 4 letters long, and it's supposed to convey an emotion.... it's not like a big cool word like fuzzyduzzywuzzygalsugar! In fact, I think I may campaign to get the name for the stoke-y feeling changed!

In fact I'm so fuzzyduzzywuzzygalsugared about that idea, I'm going to celebrate!

I like stoked. I remember when i first used it in a sentence. I was talking to myself in the garage, hadn't been surfing in two months, except for one crap 3' session, and I remember as I was walking up to my board to grab it and throw it in my ride I said to myself out loud, it a kind of giddy, almost homosexual like voice... I AM SO STOKED I GET TO GO SURFING I AM GOING SURFING I AM STOKED STOKED STOKED.

First time I ever said it. Now I use the word a lot, I think it is a right of passage or something.

I am still going to campaign to get it struck off the "cool surf words to use list" and instead everyone will have to use a different word that's not four letters long and that sounds more evocative than stoke! Maybe, oh I dunno, grizzlebombed.

everyone talks about the stoke, but I think we should have a compeition to see who describes it best. And no descriptions like "Dear Timmo, The Stoke is when I get a sick wave and I get lucky with some random chick in The Surfer's Arms and I've had a real nice piece of spliff imported straight from Bert's backyard"

Oh, maybe something more along the lines of

Dear Timmo,

I would say that The Stoke is the feeling of happiness or contentment that I feel when I've ridden a wave. It is the feeling of euphoria I get when I've ridden that perfect wave, and it's that feeling of nirvana when I've had the perfect session.

Love,

The Boys from East Grinstead

PS I don't actually know any boys from East Grinstead... in fact I don't have a clue where it is!

i have never used the word stoked as far as i can remember. this girl in my photo class last semester talked like that. "radical, stoked, so stoked, maaaan, im like.....totally stoked, whoa, no ways," etc...

i dont like it. its so predictable. in my opinion the guy who speaks properly and shows up in a suit and tie, strips down to his surf gear and shreads it up on a shoartboard is much cooler that the tanktop and boardshorts jack johnson worshiping tanned burnt out stoked hippie whatever with the VW etc etc..

also, i grew up, here in hawaii, the homeland of that creole english, which influenced that "surfer" dialect like "bro" and such.. like :

"ho bra had waves pumpin at kaisas bu.. wen you goin cuz, i stey stoked bu. I neva wen surfum long time bu. first we go 7's fo get da grind's, i stey hungry, aftas we cruise bra, i get da crips.

For me, the difference is clear:

Grom - inexperienced surfer, tries to act all cool, willing to admit that they're inexperienced, listens to experienced surfers in the lineup to stay out of the inside, will surf off to the side out of the way when it's really firing, will pull out instead of dropping in (or after they realize they just dropped in), will listen to helpful hints, will apologize for being in bad position, surf with his/her friends but don't bitch to eachother about experienced surfers

Kook - inexperienced surfer, tries to act all cool, sits 10 - 15 feet inside of lineup - usually right in the paddle lane in front of someone, doesn't look behind them when taking off thus dropping in every time they try to pop up, which they may or may not do but usually wipe out with board shooting straight at person they dropped in on, surf with their friends and act all tough and bitch about the good surfers, sit all over inside making it an obstical course as even when you come shooting down the line straight at them they stare at you not moving 3-people deep, throw boards behind them instead of duck diving or eskimo rolling.

Kooks vary from the kook that could be a grom to the kook with the $700 Channel Island mommy and daddy bought for them, which they bring to the beach in mommy and daddy's Hummer, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, or similar car.

Thing is - if they are in your (everyone's) way, and you nicely inform them of such; if they move - they're grom, if they don't - they're kook.

I'm soooooooooooooooo with you there Mr Timmo sir. I have been guilty of over-useing the word 'Stoked.' But no more! From now on, I shall be grizzlebombed! Can't wait to use it at the next surf sesh... 8) All the cool kids are doing it....
