Hi Jodie,
Welcome!
Im new to surfing myself but the lesson pages are very good on this site and if you look back through the old posts (never even have to go far) you'll be able to find loads of tips on paddling, popping up, what board to get and even what suncream wont come off in the water etc etc.
Also - theres an introduce yourself post which I completely missed first couple of times I logged in.
What kind of stage are you at with your surfing at the moment, have you been able to get much time in the water?

Thanks Sara!! I'l have a nose through then!
I had my board last week, only been once so far because of work though! Went down and just had a practise paddling and catching the small waves.
Look a bit silly down there on my own but i suppose its the only way to get better!
How long have you been surfing then?

I had my first go in May with the Surf South West surf school in Croyde which I loved.
Then I waited all summer long to see if any of my mates were going to take it up rather than just talk about it in the pub (none did) so I bought a board in August - only managed to get out 4-5 times for a few hours. I am so pleased I got the board to practise on now - thats the biggest tip Ive recieved and seen around - practice, practice and practice.
I commend you for going out on your own to practice paddling which I havent done yet but I guess obviously just be careful - Im sure its not much of an issue when the waves are small and you're not going out far.
Take it easy

hi there,
I have just the same problem, all my mates saying yeah great I'll come. But when the weekend comes no one can be bothered. So I just had lessons at first so I knew that I would be safe in the water on my own. I am watching out for a second hand board now as I am spending a small fortune on hiring a board every weekend!

To all of you people who are 1. New to the forum, and 2. Complaining about friends not willing to go with you:
1. Welcome to SW! Hope you like the forum..... everybody here is usually friendly, and will offer good advice.
2. We have forum meets occasionally (and hopefully more often than that soon) where we all meet up, have a few drinks in the night and surf in the day. Some of us are as cool as we seem to be, and a lot are as zany as they seem to be.

I have a tip for ya, take good care of your board, don't let it get a sun burn (faded from the sun) make sure you strip your board regularly, and if you get a ding, get it repaired before you let it go in the water again. When I first started surfing, the quick demise of my boards health really killed the high, because I would leave it in the sun, or that time I dropped it, and dinged it, and then went surfing, and it got water damage... These are the things that can ruin your stoke, and make have to buy another board, then you are broke, with no stoke, and that's no joke.
