Hey, I was speaking to some people yesterday and they said they would never ever surf a reef break. it wasn't rewarding enough. I personally swear by them..its easier paddling, cleaner more predictable waves..etc.

I wondered what you all think? Do you surf reef or purely sand?

I like the waves break on a reef but dont like how they feel when you hit them, but im lucky as 2 of my local breaks are 1/2reef 1/2 sand 1's left the others a right hander 8)
Best of all worlds

depends really i love surfing one reef near me though its not really a shallow hollow wave, and more of a rocky bottom than a proper 1ft deep type reef where you can see the bottom, but ive hit a few rocks wiping out. so long as there arnt many people out, or you just get everyone at the peak hussling for waves and kind of takes the fun out of it

surfed on a reef over Summer, and I really loved it! the waves were clean, long rides. The only thing is that you can't put your foot down because there is fire coral, and I also sliced my fingers on the coral there, but as long as you're fine with not putting your feet down, and on the odd wipeout don't mind a few razor nicks, then I think it's awesome, and I can't wait to surf there again!

I have surfed a few reef breaks, mostly in france

I personally love surfing them, one of my best waves was on a reef break in france where it was super clean and you could see the rocky reef and fish beneath you in the wave...

The only thing i dont like about them is that it can get pretty crowded and aggressive in the line up espcially if there is only one take off point.

I think the good out ways the bad and i hope to surf some more reef breaks soon

reef waves hold there shape a lot better. When it gets big thats when reef break really gets going. But i wouldnt surf a reef a hidden reef break until i saw it on a really low tide.

i surfed a reef break at North Shore, Oahu..the point is called Chun's reef, i thought that was the best wave i've ever ridden..it's gentle, prefect shape, it's very easy to paddle, it lets u do stuff u cant do on a beach break..i almost got into a barrel..i was so stoked! so yeah, i would choose a reef break any day..just have to get me some reef booties :D

Over here the 3 reef breaks are all pretty nasty 2ft deep reef.

One is purely rocks and barnacles, the other two are diving coral when there are no waves, so its pretty sharp coraly stuff.

I always wear booties though. I want to keep my feet intact!
