surfing in thick fog

Well i thought i would wake up early and go for a 7am surf to beat the weekend crowds the only snag was it was foggy very foggy. It wasnt particually crowded but there were enough people to make it pretty dodgy. Every time someone caught a wave i would hear a loud yell saying "im going right" or "im on a wave" the visability was poor but you could still make out the shapes and such.

Anybody surfed in conditios simular or worse? I'll say one thing it kept me on my toes the whole time

Yup ive had a couple of those. Worst one was during winter last year, went out for a 6 in the morning sesh and once i had paddled out i couldnt see the beach at all, or the pier. I had no idea how far out i was, and to add to that the water was freezing fleshin' cold and i only had my half suit on and the waves were gettin intense. Ahhh good times

That was the one thing my mum made me promise never to do - surf in fog. So I never have, and never will.

it means they were riding the wave through the pier (you know the pilons) Where i live one side of the beach is sandy and other is reef (the reef has a tiny surfable area) the two sides are split by a pier the wvae form much better reefside so to get a longer ride they shoot the pier. It is very dodgy and seen quite a few accidnts but you can get an amazingly long ride in the right conditions. I used to bodyboard through the pier which let me tell you is extremelly hrd to do and its really gnarley when you get too close to the pilons all those sharp barnicles and such i ripped my wetsuit and gashed my arm the one day. So doing it in the fog is just plain suicidle.
