Boscombe surf

Postby Sar » Sat Sep 02, 2006 10:06 pm

Hi All,

Went to Boscombe today for my first surf. Only managed to even get on the board twice because I couldnt get out, I still really enjoyed getting outside and into the water, but how long do I have to wait till I can stand up and ride a wave?

I do realise this is a stupid question but I just am curious as to how long it took others to be able to really enjoy surfing and ride a wave rather then just laying on the board and standing if your lucky.

Also, I am clumsy and have terrible balance :D but still love every second of being in the water and falling off my board.

Thanks
Sar

P.s - still havent figured out if Im goofy or regular - both dont feel right.

Firstly you shouldnt concern yourself about paddling to the line-up just yet. rather get popping up right on the whitewater/foamies. As far as how long it will atke to stand up confidently this is xtremelly unpredictable as some people stand up straight away whilst others take much mmuch longer. If you take much much longer dont feel bad about this it just means your body is taking longer to find ts balance it does not mean that you will be a worse surfer in the long run. (always remember that)

Everyone is different with me i was standing up on the first wave literally but then i expected this as years of bodyboarding dropknee had implanted the pop-up motion in my head. It took me a week before i was standing up confidently and about another week before i was actually riding proper waves.

It also has to do with how much wave experience you get i live by the beach so i go in everyday which = a lot of experience.

This goofy/regular problem is not uncommen i had the added problem because when i used to BB i would use either or. The best method to test what you are is to descide what your power leg is i.e the one you would throw a roundhouse kick with. If that happens to be your right foot then you can be pretty shure you are regular (there are exceptions) When i started i found it much much easier to pop-up goofy but im actually regular footed the reason why this happens if because your power leg is the clever leg and can adapt itself easier. Also imagine yourself really carving up a wave doing cutbacks etc and then imagine your foot position.

You should not concern yourself with getting good quick if anything this leads to frustration so just take it one step at a time and build your experience thats the bst way to create a solid foundation from the floor up

Have fun 8)

Another way to find out if your goofy/regular is.... find a slippery area and run at it and try and slide which ever foot you put forward first will prob be which way round you surf

i enjoyed surfing 20 minutes in because i stood up and rid the wave for a while. It was so fun. I really fell in love with surfing about a week after, following my first unbroken wave. I was sooo proud! I think i stoof up fast because i used to bodyboard and loved waves (i would go in 5 6 hours a day if i could). I also ride bmx for the balance, i can roll on a skateboard easily and i snowboard. My most enjoyable ride was 5 days ago. After having surfed 3 weeks i caught a wave and followed it for 15 meters, going up and down it. (no cutbacks yet, just zigzagging).

Also to see if yor goffy or regular if someone pushes you the foot you make move first is your powerfoot (does not work 100%)

Hi All,

Thanks for the suggestions. Went out again early Sunday morning and have figured Im regular footed - not that I stood up or anything just felt better trying to!

When I do stand up I'll let you know.
