Hi, Im going on vacation to the North Shore of Oahu, and also Maui in February. I was just wondering what area I should stay at. I plan on surfing Kammieland, and Laniakea . I am not sure where to stay on Maui, but I am guessing anywhere on the North shore would be fine. I was wondering if any of you guys/girls could recommend an area to stay, on North Shore Oahu or Maui. I dont mind driving a little as we will probably rent a car or some means of transportation.any advice would be appreciated.

Lucky sod! i love Kammieland!
That's where I used to surf as a kid (only when it wasn't beefing). It needs to be clean to get a good wave though!
Umm, accomodation.. I think there is a Hilton across from the beach. Probably if you stay more towards Honolulu it gets cheaper and cheaper.
Have a good trip!

plus in febuary the waves could be out of your league. even if the waves are smaller, the locals are crazy. ive been surfing regularly (everyday if its big, not at all if its small, so maybe 2-3x a week average, for the past 3 and a half years, so i think im atleast ok.) when i go up there now is till get hassled.
plus there are always the sharks to worry about, and the kahuna menehunes, and the mahoos. they dont like your type around here.
but seriously, why dont you want to surf in town? there are some nice beaches which arnt that crowded.

Thanks so much for your replies guys. hawaiiSUCKSexceptsurf where do you usually surf? where would you recommend I surf? I havent ever been to Oahu before and I was just looking at kammieland and Laniakea because I dont wanna risk getting hurt at some of the rougher spots like pipe sunset. I said kammieland and Laniakea because from what Ive read theyre not insane spots, but do require a certain amount of skill. And sharks arent really a problem for me because Ive lived and surfed in places where shark attacks are the norm and you see sharks all the time. Keep the advice coming guys

I don't know Oahu too well, but good place to stay in Maui is Kahana--it's right across from S-turns. Kihei is also nice. Maalaea is very centrally located if you want to hit Ho'okipa as well as S-turns, but it is also very very windy.
Never been to the islands in the winter, only summer, but want to go back one winter just to look at the big waves.

ooh i didnt even know that about those spots. i just assumed north shore and winter means insane. ive only beet to pipeline and haleiwa and one other im not sure the name of. it was pretty extreme when i went. it might just be by chance in febuary. if youre here for a week it could be insanely huge with even closed beaches for all north shores, or it could be moderate or flat. febuary is usually after the peak in december.
i usually surf at daimondhead or east of waikiki away from the crowds.

Well, February shouldn't be too much of a problem if you have lots of experience with waves about double o-head?
Kammies is not such a problem with locals, because it is only a crappy little spot. Sharks- Not too many, but if you do see them, be careful
safety- kammies has a stupidly insane rip current which kils so many people. Its like a flowing river, so stay out of it!
Good Luck

thanks again guys for the replys. and Dec I dont think Id have too much of a problem then I have just seen videos of people getting hurt at Pipe and its just physched me out. I dunno if its true, but my freind told me they pull dead people out of the coral caverns from time to time. Id rather be at a relatively safer spot. and Ill make sure to watch the rip. thanks man. by the way did you say you used to surf kammieland as a kid? if you lived on the north shore, are there any other spots you would reccommend? preffereably a biut mellower than pipe and and sunset etc? I know thast in February its probably nmot gonna be small or anything thanks again guys

As a kid because I was brought up there. I knew my limits, I knew the break and everyone that surfed there.
Kammies isn't such a leathel break, its not as shallow as Pipe. I can only remeber hitting the reef once. I only surfed it at maximum 8ft (HWS)
Look around the South shore. You might not get too much swell during the winter, but its worth a try.

Re: Maui North Shore being windy. It's windy when the trades blow. In February, it is a bit unusual to have trade winds - so we're out playing in the surf (without a sail). Of course, anything, including a big old Kona storm is possible.
For surfing at Hookipa, Paia Bay, Kanaha, Jaws etc., staying in Paia or Haiku is sweet - and far away from the tourist side of the island.

Here's a bunch of others.
