If you don't want to get a mal and you are still at the novice stage then why not go for a minimal - if you get one around 7'3 - 7'6 you should be able to carve it up on one, while still finding it relatively easy to get the waves.
Try one out first if you can to give yourself a better idea of how they go and if they will suit you.

Then i started chatting to this shaper who was gonna make me one. then he said that i could probably make my own and gave me contacts ect. what u think to this? waist of time and money especially me beein resombly new to the sport to under stand making the main tool to surf ie the bord.

Shaping a surfboard

Get the shaper to shape you a board. If he's a mate you'll get a better deal that you will anywhere.
As for shaping your own board, my guess is that your first few attempts at shaping a board are unlikely to result in a decent surfable board. Shaping is a skill that has to be learned. Maybe you could help the shaper with your board and learn from what he does - start up your own board factory!
