Leash came undone! Aaargh!

I'm only new to surfing and my board is new too. Went out yesterday and board got pulled- which is always happening cos I do nothing but fall off! Anyway, went to get board and it was not there! The knot on the string on my leash untied and my board was gone! I did actually check it before going as it seemed a slightly questionable form of connecting the leash and board but presumed as that's what everyone has it would be okay...
However, after yesterday I'm not so sure! Any tips on making sure it's super duper stuck. It was ok as it drifted into shore but still... too many heart beats lost!
Also, I'd appreciate any thoughts on suitable things to wash wetsuits out with? Other than proper wetsuit shampoo... Hair shampoo/ shower gel/ washing up liquid? Just says mild detergent but puzzled what's classed as that!
Thanks!

Assuming you've got a new leash - tie the bit of string in a circle, then thread the circle through the leash plug, then pull the circle through itself (did that make sense?) This means the bit of string is a lot shorter than if you just tie it around the leash plug.
THEN pass the leash through the string such that the knot is covered up by the velcro so the string cant move.
Answer to Q2 - Bubble bath does the job.

That is what I did. It was the knot in the string that came undone. It wasn't covered up by the velcro mind you but just bit worried the knot can undo itsself again! EEK!

My leash gets pretty annoying to. Everytime I try and get a wave I get tangled in my leash. It gets on my nerves.
The best way to wash out your wetsuit is to get your hose and put it on jet, its ike giving it a powerwash

. It rely works and no washing liquids are needed.

Double up on your knot, and pull it as tight as possible. It'll be a fat ugly lump of string, so put it in your leash - this means that a) you cant see it and b) the velcro holds it tight and prevents it moving so its less likely to come undone.
Oh, and check it once in a while.

when i get back from a dawny and im in a rush i fill the bath up with cold water andthe chuck my wetty in putting something heavy on it so it sinks my theory is that osmosis (spelling) will make all the salt come out.
Is this wrong?
Am a just a lazy flesher?

I rinse my suit out with a hose.. that's about it. Never actually 'washed' it.
As for the leash.. if you tie a proper square knot then you should be ok. You could also try one of those sliding knots (dunno what its called). I haven't had a leash come undone in 25 years. Had a couple snap on me, but never come untied.
One thing - when you get the leash, you shouldn't undo any of the knots they already have on it. If you don't have a rope through the leash-holoe on your board, then you should just put the loop on the end of the leash through the hole, and then pass the leash through the loop.
Nowadays, most leashes come with double-linked velco to do that, which also shouldn't come off.

Osmosis says that the wetsuit would swell up
But, yeah, thats what I do.... except I have the bath first. Then plonk the suit in the tepid water, with bubble bath, and put the wetsuit box on top to make it sink a bit. Next day, or when I can be bothered, it gets a quick rinse with the shower, then hung neatly in the garage where it can drip all over the floor making puddles

One time, my leash came undone, and it took me like, 7 minutes to find my board. I was freaking out.
