i got that the first couple times i went too. the bruises were the size of my fists. i also got one on my pelvic bone.theres no way to stop it but it goes away, i dont know how it works but i guess your skin toughens up. same goes for the pain in your neck from holding your head up while paddling. it does last a while though.

hey freakywelshchick.
A number of my female friends (wife included) get exactly the same problem.

Here's what you have to do:

For you knee bruises - they're from the fact you cath you knees as your popping as you already know. Try and bring your legs a bit closer into you - straight into more of a crouch position when you spring up rather than kneeling first. It's just a lot of practice!

NOW - here's the good bit...

the hip bruises can be fixxed with a little bit of DIY work (I should patent and sell these). Try and get hold of some off-cut material from a 5mm wetsuit - a surf shop should some. Or an old wetsuit even.

then - cut out 2 circles about four or five inches in diameter. From these circles, cut out a small circles from each - about the size of a golf ball.

Next time you surf - slip one of these circles down your wetuist/swimming cossie each side as you are getting ready - one over each hip.

da daaaaaaaaaa - hip protectors!!!

YEp its comon ass.. some wetsuits have slightly more padding in that area for this reason but nor=t normally.

Us B.Boarders get it really bad on the base of our ribs where the stance hits the board. Can be so tender sometimes :(

I get the standard 2 bruises where my ribcage meets the board when paddling.

Can't say I've ever heard of the hip thing though!!

Yep, I'll have to join the bandwaggon here - I have really bony hips and they stick out and dig into the board...It really does hurt! Same with my ribs. I think I might have to try out your hip protector idea, too, jonny! You really should patent that, it's a great idea! Ifact, I'm off to hunt for material now...! x x Hannah
