Bad surf

I recently went surfing since I was on vacation and havn't in like a month and a half. So anyway I paddled out at a pretty shallow point and every wave it seemed I would nose dive on my 7"4. I'm not sure how but I just seemed to lost my sweet spot and looked like a total kook. Its kind of a crowded spot and a local there was giving me pointers so I wouldn't get banged up on shallow reef. Does anyone get this problem after not surfing for a long time and maybe I should practice pop ups at home everyday or so since that seems to be causing me trouble.

hey beachbum,

I've never had such a long break in my surfing, but I know that I definitly get good days and bad days... where I can't do anything, normally because I'm stressed about something else, or eaten too many sandwhiches or something... did you have something else on your mind?

And then sometimes I just have a bad day... and there's no reason, and its really annoying but you just have to file it away as experience, and hope to do better soon.. I went through a phase about a month ago where I didn't feel I was making any improvement at all. Have a search for my thread because I got loads of good advice and motivating words (As is customary on the forum!)

Also, it may not have been you at all...it could have been the waves, sometimes they just aren't doing you any favours, what was it like?

Practising at home really works, I can testify to this, it is so so worth practising 10 pop ups every morning.

But keep at it, persist and learn, and I'm sure you've improved loads, and will improve loads, and you'll read this thread in a months time and smile at it.... 8)

yep, bad days suck, i had a day last week where it seemed like every wave was shutting down on me and sections i know i should have made eluded me. On top of that i got a decent wave only to have bodyboarder drop in on me, bail, and kick his board up into my face, he got a mouthfull of abouse for his trouble, which didnt improve my mood much.
but then a couple of days later i went out and had the best surf ive had in ages, right on top of my form and catching more waves than i had the energy for, makes the crap days worthwhile then.
