We used to call them plastic surfers, but god knows what the kids today call them. ...I know, lets invent a new term, how about...."funboarders"....

Call them townies, townie surfers, the swell brigade, chavs, kevs, weekenders, what ever they are called they cant surf even though they may rekon they can.

haha brent, there are plenty of people on funboards who can rip a lot better than you can on a shortboard :-p

depends if they talk it up and xxxxx but don't actually surf then i'd say they were posers. if they're simply obsessed begginners...nothing, give them a break! learning to surf is hard, enthusiasm is necessary.

Is the current trend for funboards a direct result of the gradually increasing obesity statistics worldwide, i.e. many people are simply too fat & heavy to paddle & use a shortboard effectively...

Are they a direct result of the "working" culture we find ourselves in in the early "00's" ? Are people are so busy working long hours they can only surf once or twice a week and thus never get good enough at paddling or water fit to use a short board properly.

Are they a symptom of the instant gratification culture we a surrounded by...the I want to be a surfer NOW and I want to stand up NOW, I've been to the surf shop & decked myself out in the labels....so give me my funboard & I wanna stand up today !!!!!!

They are not a "longboard" and are not connected to that iconic period, nor the late 70's shortboard revolution...so what are they?
In my opinion they are a hybrid designed for one purpose... to achieve a good success or "hit" rate, i.e be easy to stand up on...and that's it.

Because they are such a compromise design wise...you cannot do anything well on them - you cannot toes over the nose like a Mal, you cannot cut back or even turn them hard. You cannot (heaven forbid) ride a tube on one, Why is it that no good surfers (I'm talking Pros here) ride them "and now folks the Andy Irons v Kelly Slater heat of the Bollabong Pro....and wait folks, oh no, it can't be - is Kelly breaking out the...Funboard for this heat???"

Not once have I ever seen anyone I know pack one in their bags when bound for exotic or interesting surfing locations...."oh yes, I'm off to Indo tomorrow, the surf is going to be great...better pack my new Funboard eh?"

Lets be serious...

Sorry if I offend people, but at my local break every day I see weekend charlies or whatever you want to call them, these fools out floundering around on "Funboards" getting in peoples way, making the already busy peaks genuinely dangerous with their uncontrolled barges. Or squealing teenage girls who've seen some stupid Cameron Diaze (is that how you spell it ??) movie & think they like the idea of surfing..

These people do not hang on to their funboards when attempting to duck-dive. They don't even know they're meant to hang onto them, they don't even care....daily I see these people who have no interest in learning how to surf well.... their only goal is to stand up.

I make no claims to be an expert surfer, I'm old & wise enough to let that one go "P" or whoever you are, I have however seen enough surfing trends come & go...and I am looking forward to the demise of this "Ford Cortina" of surfboard desgn....

i love wannabe surfers they make me laugh they just come in and think they own the break with there foam surfboards that they bought from argos..... ive herard of a name for the wannabe surfers could of been kooksbut sometimes a get that mixed up with xxxxx........

some people don't live next to a beach and maybe don't drive. i bought a bic board (i guess thats what you mean by a fun board) because thats what was recommended to me as a beginner. im desperate to surf well, i go as often as i can but sometimes that can be less than once a fortnight. funboards are what are being recommended to loads of beginners, i think you should give them more of a break, pain in the arse though they may be. on my bic i am progressing and i consider myself a surfer, not a wannabe, even though i am not good at it.

Nat Young once said the best surfer in the world ...is the guy having the most fun. Pretty true I think.
Me, personally, I like having women surfers about, they add a bit of colour & grace to the sport. I enjoy scaring teenage boys on boogie-boards far more, they're a slower moving & softer target :-)

Its a difficult subject, i learnt on a Bic and is still use it from time to time when the surf is small.
I would not recommend a glass board to any beginner there is just no point your only gonna end up dinging it and becoming frustrated with surfing.
I think the real kooks are the beginners on short boards (unless your a kid)
I see them out there on boards that are too small for them desperately paddling and never catching anything.
Im no veteran but i started slightly before all this madness, i was only one of a handful of bic owners when i started, there are many more now.
Everyone who starts is gonna be labelled kook wannabe/ whatever, perserverence, respect to locals and knowing your place is the only way to earn respect.
Oh and surfing throughout the winter will always get you known amongst the hardcore, especially in the north sea :p

yeah i agree its the "so pro" boarders that are the real problem. The ones that surf like five times a year in the summer and think they are pro because they can stand up.

im riding the new bic 7.6 perfomer now its really quiet good, quiet boyant but really good at turning and quiet light, its for everyone i think including beginners and pro's so i wouldnt really call people kooks cos they ride a bic well not from my experience, or that perticular board, anyone else had a go on one?? tell us what u think of it

I live in the middle of England, no car, nobody willing to take me, stupid exams at the mo...get the point? Pretty damn hard to make it to ANY break every week! Right now I haven't been for...a whole year!!! But I was OK at it last year and just coz I haven't been for a whole year it doesn't make me a kook - I hope! I mean, I'm hardly amazing, infact most people would probably think I'm rubbish, but that might just be the "pros" who are just reall...arrogant for want of a nicer word and think they own the place! Everone's gotta start somewhere. Hmph. Give us poor landlocked peole a break!

yeah fair everyones gotta start some where, but i think the thing that annoys us is the people that think they are surfers because they wear hoodies with qiuksilver or some other brand plastered all over it.
