When its to big bodyboarding is the way forward for me, it gets me used to playing in bigger waves and i enjoy not having a solid board strapped to my leg when the big wipeouts happen.
It's funny how alot of surfers really knock sponging yet when its big where are they?
Their all proberbly at home crying into their coco about how they couldnt make it out back!

Sounds like your mates have their image more in mind than actually having fun and enjoying surfing.

I've only done it once, but it was fun. The old beach I used to surf at though had a lot of bodyboarders and it seemed like they were always in the way.

never really given it a go as the only time i tried my bro strapped some flippers to my feet and sent me in .. within a few short minutes i had massive calf cramp and nearly drowned .. kinda lost its appeal after that

I agree..................the fact he put a full stop after saying 'full stop' means 'XS wind is in effect saying

"Gay, full stop, full stop"

The height of ignorance

Exactly even if your not taking it seriously everyone can have fun. For me its jsut far more versitile than stand-up. Your not stuck in one mode all the time...

Bodyboarding defines aerial tricks. Theres something just great about riding prone pulling off a trick and then poping up into dropknee position 8). There are moves on a bodyboard that no surfer would dream of attempting. However im still a newb surfer but i have to say it has its own special place. But i would never give up sponging its too much fun.

Some of the most extreme surfing, past and present, comes from our sponging bretheran.

Check out Mike Stewart at pipeline or shorebreak Waimea. Hell check him out bodysurfing Pipe :)

Some of those guys are just insane.

I sponged for years before I moved over to standup surfing. Really my wife was the big influence in both. Steep short waves, drop-knee 720, barrel rolls. Plenty of extreme manevuers that bigger boards just cant pull off.

Still drag a BB around with me lotsa places... Just in case.

ive done bodyboarding, and personally id rather tackle a gnarly takeoff on my feet then lying down, just feels like i have more control over the board.
Mind you, theres a secret spot here which gets really hollow when it breaks (3 or 4 times a year) but even on those rare days it doesnt often get big enough to get shacked up on a surfboard, i wouldnt mind taking a sponge out there one day just for that.
Problem with BBers is that its so easy to pick one up, get out, and catch waves, whereas surfing takes time to learn - and in that time you learn the rules (right of way, respect for locals etc.), so you get guys who have no respect getting out and competing for waves with experienced guys and that brings a bad rep onto the rest of you, same thing happens with goat boaters.
