Is it me or the board?

I own a Hanson Competitor from the 60's. It is 9'5" and a very heavy board. I did learn how to surf on this board but find it difficult to manuver and paddle because of its weight. Maybe I'm answering my own question here but would a newer, lighter board be less frustrating to get it to go and catch more rides or is this just a strength issue. Thanks for all comments in advance.

I think you find any longboard to be difficult to maneuver. It just takes a lot more effort and finesse. Turning with more weight on the fin will make things easier.
A heavy board will take more energy to get going. In clean conditions you will probably find this not be a problem. In junky surf it can be more difficult as the chop will constantly be slowing you down (you will probably find that it's difficult on any longboard).
IMO; I would keep what you've got and you will get more proficient with it.
