obviously most people on this web site realise that we all gotta begin somewhere, and that not being able to carve it up dosn't make you a kook. what pro's are you talking about? do you mean the hot-shit locals?
don't even give them the time of day. just ignore the bad vibes and get on with your surfing. they'll respect your persaverance. i've never had any probs with locals, every surfer i've ever met has been total sweet, esp. when i started out and would do dumb things like accidently get in their way. and every time i got a wave they would all cheer for me. sucks that you seem to be getting a hard time though. maybe you have too many people at your break and you need to find a new one without the aggro locals protecting "their" precious waves?... just a thought.

ps - directing your anger against people on this site who tend to actually be a pretty friendly bunch is counter productive. and most people on this site arn't "pro's"....!

it was about 5 ft today but pretty messy and i had too much due with uni...am currently at library "working hard" on my dissertation...yeah right.. as for surfing in nz, its a pretty good place, we've got some pretty awesome places to surf. its usually between 3 to 6 foot at my break, but i try to avoid it when its 5 or bigger as keep getting smashed on all the bloody rocks and besides then there is an actual line up....not my style. oh and i'm begginner-intermediate too.

ahhh! its exams here and i have another 18,000 words to write of my diss in the next 4 or so weeks!!!! no surfing for me for the next while....
any one know anything bout Zehra Cirak or Feridun Zaimoglu? having trouble finding enough references...and am very sick of reading academic german texts and post colonial theory, both being insanely boring.
as for studying and surfing, i like to think of it as having some kind of balance in my life. honestly if i spent all day every day in the library researching i would go mad! besides, i'm obsessed with surfing in a big way, so even if i didn't have any other stressful commitments i would be out there....i don't care if any one thinks i'm a poser, i'd like to see them surf in 7 degree water right next to a great white breeding colony! a real surfer is someone who loves to surf! simple as that.

cool, if you're referring to St Clair ( as I think you are) and you're a beginner..I believe it's fair & reasonable to expect some grief from locals as this is not really (in most conditions) a good beginner break, Anybody who's anybody in Otago WILL be there on a good day. If you do not know the "rules" of surf ettiquite at a busy & sometimes crowded break....well, what do you expect ??
Head up the coast abit to Waikouaiti, Aramoana, or down to Brighton or (on a calmer day) Blackhead.
How do I know this? I grew up in Dunners & learned to surf there in the late 1970's. I too wore the brunt of "locals" like Tim Barton & co who, believe me, were considerably nastier than the current generation. Thankfully I learned quick & paid my dues, got snaked for waves & dropped in on...and guess what...it's my turn now I'm a grown-up..and I do it with reckless abandon. Hah, I remember once being out the back & seeing this guy (no names here) paddle out & paddle up to this kook with something stuffed down the back of his wetsuit. He went up to this guy, unzipped his wetsuit and said "hey dude...is this your carburettor???". Classic ;-)
You have to see it from an "experts" point of view, any fool these days who's seen a surfing video & thinks "hey I like the idea & image of that" can buy a "mini mal or a fun-board, easy enough to paddle & eventually get out the back...when hey get there... they cause mayhem. I've often yelled abuse at people like this. They think all you have to do is buy a board, cruise on down to Hydro Surf (if in Dunedin) deck out in the gears & hey-presto...I'm a surfer.
Many beginners today simply don't give a s_it about learning the ettiquite and "dance" (read hassling) that happen out the back on a good day at a good break like St Clair. That's why they flip off at you. It's nothing personal NZ Gal, it's called payin your dues..

hiya Boris
yeah, i mean St Clairs. I'd love to try some other breaks but don't have a car so St Clairs it is. I just keep my board down there. As for grief from locals, i've never had any probs so far! as i said in my post, all the guys here are actually totally sweet. maybe cos i'm a girl? or maybe cos st clairs ain't exactly crowded most days since the water started getting cold proper styles. surf etiquitte was the first thing i learnt, i don't wanna be snaking someones wave, thats not cool no matter how long you've surfed for aye. do you still surf st clairs or moved on to other breaks?
St Clair...

Hyah,
born & bred Dunners lad. Grew up surfing St Clair ( when not running from the Barton Bros, Stu Carse & co), but more often Waikouaiti (family batch there), and my favourite break of all- Cambells Bay (just by Kakanui), Aromoana was a fave as was Backhead. I left surfing years ago & returned to it only two years ago... after persuing other sporting interests.
I left Dunedin in 1998, came up here to Mount Maunganui to house-sit for a week, guess what... still live here. I miss Dunners surf in all it's ground swell glory, The Cook back-bar & Plume with a passion, although I do love the 24 degree water here in summer. Currently it's a nice 15 degrees and it's mid winter.
But really, like much of the coastal upper North Island the place is full of w_ankers who's sole interest is making capital gains on their beachfront real-estate rather than having interesting enjoyable lives.
Read the stuff I posted about surf fitness...
ps..Boris & Brent is the same person :-) Love this web stuff....
