Surfing Waves

i saw somthin on late-night tv awile bak about some river in africa that people can surf on and the waves dont break for awile so its a pretty long ride.....and when people surf it they wear somthin tight caz this fishl swim up ther ding-hole can anyone identify it?

Its called bore tide riding, and it seems it can be quite dangerous as it is actually a tidal wave.

There are rumors that the Qiantang river in China has had waves up to 7.5meters..(Source: Some random website about it..)

yeah, they used to have a really great site about river surfing, but I think the guy running it realized he needed to spend his time on other stuff and stop the site. Or maybe I just can't find it....

I don't know about ding holes that much, but has anyone seen this or hell, ridden it? That would make a sweet adventure trip. I'm looking for something crazy to do.

sure larry, ive rode that last year... i wish. the voice said its difficult to ride but it looked really nice and pretty clean too.

i went to read more about surfing rivers and read aboout one in germany that has a surfing community built around it. so my question is what are the rules??? theres only one wave, so how do they decide how long you get to ride and when your turn is over?

apparently theres a pretty good one of those tidal river aves in england. anyone ever ride it?

That'll be the Severn Bore, which has been ridden for 10km or more.

As for the rules - there arent all that many
Search for some pics, and you'll see dozens of people on this one wave. But the thing is you follow it in a straight(ish) line along the path of the river. Its not got a clean face (or at least rarely) so you're not carving along it, but cruising with it, so dropping in isnt really an issue - so just ride it as long as you can.

I never got around to it, but I know a bunch of people in the UK who were obsessed with doing it

That looks like a standing wave at the bottom of a weir. I've never seen anyone surf them and didn't know you could but I imagine it's your turn till you fall or get tired then next person.
