The cost of surf clothing is a nightmare - I guess that becomes a problem when the brands are becoming really popular and there is big money to be made. The quality of some of the surf brands can be pretty shocking and you really are paying for the name not the item.

the thing is we live in a consumer society, so the marketing vultures capatalize on what ever is currently cool. and surfing my friend, is cool. its like saying, look, i belong to this style tribe, and this is my theme music and creed etc. Make your own fashion. you are are a surfer on the inside, it dosn't matter what you wear. ascribing to a style tribe is lame anyway. try op shopping (second hand clothes stores) or get some plain tees and get creating. its more fun then buying some logo covered bullsht.

Keep an eye out for establishing 'brands' and companys.. stear clear of the big names and keep an eye on the bargin sections of places like Shore.co.uk and extremepie.com...

Hi everyone,
I'm currently working on designs for my own clothing range specifically aimed at surfers etc. on the same lines as SaltRock, Quiksilver and so on.
Emphasis with my clothing is always on quality and cost, I want to keep costs down as much as possible and don't want dragging into the higher price markets.
If you'd like to see initial designs or are interested in the products further, please email me at
justin.mann@tjlewis.co.uk
Production has slowed at the moment due to the fact that I'm struggling to find an appropriate 'label' name for this section of the company!
Any ideas please email them to me and I'm sure we can look after the winner!
I also do custom designed T-Shirts etc. and can produce one offs very cheaply.[/b]

I would definatly go to TK max, got 3 pairs of trainers, - 2 quichsilver and 1 air walk for under £60 with 1 pair being marked up at £70 were £13.
You have to go quite often though as sometimes they have nothing in and sometimes they have loads in.

ok, i always thought that it was TJ Max, not tk. is that what it is in the UK?
yeah, and i would definately go to TJMax, they have a ton of name brand stuff for cheap. oh, and also marshalls, it's pretty much the same thing as TJmax, but tj max is better.

what do you need billabong shirts for? are you a baller or something?
there is no surf fashion. no wearing $30 t shirts because they have a logo on them, i buy short sleeve striped dress shirts for 4-8 dollars and savers or goodwill and people compliment me on my clothes all the time. and wearing board shorts when youre not surfing is stupid. it makes you look like a poser.
i found board shorts at the gap for 12 dollars. theyre water proof and everything. the only time i would buy them for over 30 dollars is if i was getting them for free from my friend who knows a good scam if you know someone working the register at a clothing store.

lol thats great for you, but generally brand stuff is actually nicer. i've got some good bargains for some nice looking stuff before, but generally cheaper stuff doesn't fit as well or is poorer quality. if you buy brand stuff make sure it is good stuff like, but buying nice clothes doesn't make you a poser. it's like paul frank.. i got a few things from there, cos i like the design on it. sure its expensive, but if you like it buy it. when you stop to worry about being a poser, your just proving to yourself that you are, cos you're worrying about what the other surfers will think! ( i know paul frank is not a surf brand, it's just an example) if you like billabong go ahead and buy billabong i say!!!

my two cents on this subject
If you ask 90% of people wearing an oniell t shirt or shorts and ask them who he is they probably would not know that he invented the wet suit.
I like to think that the popularity of these clothing items in volume sales helps to keep down the not so popular items. eg wetsuits, rashies
I just looked on the internet, typed in oneill on kelkoo, first thing that turned up was a pair of shorts £50
My wetsuit only cost three times the price of that, i use it all year round as many times as its physically possible.

I see Kieran's point - what used to be 'real surf brands' like O'Neil/ Billabong etc have now gone way too mainstream.
That said I also agree that TK Max is a great place to get this kind of stuff. I bought 4x T-Shirts (1 Rusty, 1 Billabong, 2 Rip Curl) and a pair of Quiksilver trainers - all for £60.
You now have to look at some of the less mainstream brands if you want to 'show your surferness!' I found a couple of Balin Ts in TK Max and some Gul stuff.
Quiksilver are now unfortunately like 'The Ben Sherman of Surf Brands!!'
It's a tricky one but I reckon if you're a surfer, it shows anyway. One of the guys I work with asked me if I surf at all and we were both wearing suits, so I don't know how he could tell - maybe I just ooze 'cool'!! LOL
Cheers
