newest desperate measure: barge surfing

so I didn't see step into liquid....yeah yeah, whatever

but how exactly do you get to the waves off a barge? jet-ski? just wait in the middle of the channel?

this one is rather far-fetched. There are lots of car carriers and barges and tankers going by near me, but I have a feeling that the guys think I'm like a terriorist or something.

and what can be expected of wave size? I know its depending on the size of the ship, but average?

Clearly my actual experience of this is, ooh, something approaching zero...

...But I do know that to get to the wake of an oil-tanker, you'll need a boat and to be towed in. The biggest problem is being in the right place at the right time so you're not run over by the tanker, but can still get on the waves

hence you cant just paddle :?

If you're on it, you can surf for miles though :D

Im thinking there are easier ways to get a surfing fix....

I'm just paddling out to see if I can get a wake from one of the destroyers going in and out of Portsmouth Harbour...

Hmmm....so that picture makes it look like he is riding the wake that comes in shore and breaks, not directly after it leaves the boat.....or is that right behind the ship?

I've got a boat to tow me in, but it seems a jet ski would be better. Now I just need to intercept the schedules of the ships....

i think they ride the wake as it hits sandbars near the tankers route.

alternatively you could get a really fat guy to jump off the barge and ride the waves generated from that
