thats the point, do you then go for the manufacturer or the design and type

You cant say between manufacturer and shape/size. You go for both! When I go for a board I have a specific shape and size in my mind knowing on the type of board I want and then go looking for it. I wouldnt't get it if the manufacturer was rubbish and not known of because you wouldn't know how well the board performs.
