holy crap !!! i cannot see how he survived that...first, the initial shock of hitting the water what looks like face first, and holding his breath while tumbling through the air...god

its no joke, just because these photos show up on some page doesnt mean all of these guys are still alive. i saw a picture of jon mozo wiping out last year when he died. i think it was the wave he died on. i couldnt find it though, he has too much photography up already.

I was thinking that about this picture....thats about a 40 foot wave. I reckon you'd have to be pretty lucky to get out of that alive; but I s'pose if you're doing tow-in your partner's got you covered :?

Yeah I agree, but it works both ways, big waves wipeouts dont necessarily mean death and "small" wave wipeouts dont mean you will be okay. The wave that killed Mark Foo was 'only' 18ft, now i know everyone going to yell at me and tell me thats big, but ive seen wipeouts on waves that are 30+ feet (like in billabong odyssey) and people come out okay, there are so many other factors that come into it (like how you hit the water, whether theres a shallow reef, how heavy the waves are, maybe your board hits you on the head and knocks you out....etc).

I'm thankful to make it out alive in some of the wipeouts I have in 4-6 ft waves!!!

Anyways enough of my ranting, more piccies....

Yeah, that's my understanding.

The pipe locals I "know" (via email or forums) reckon that Pipeline is at it's most dangerous at single to double overhead. under or over and they are happy to surf it. But in that range... At least one of them WON'T paddle out in that range, anyway.

I found out some info about this wipeout, apparently Mike Brummet only suffered minor injuries (AMAZINGLY!!!!!!!!) he hit the water so hard and plunged so deep, he spent the rest of the heat coughing up blood. I would definitely go and by myself a lotto ticket after that one!!

probably him falling plus the added speed and weight of the lip pushing him into the water.....yikes. sometimes I dont realize because its a still picture that its not just him falling in front of the wave, its the lip coming down and smashing him into the trough.
