Its the same with me. I have been surfing for about a year now, and last session I did a really nice backside cutback to a frontside snap. It was the first time I've ever done something like that and I was so proud of myself :D

Can't say for sure, but...maybe it's because your rotating your body more on the back side to see where you're going, which is helping your turn???

possibly, it just seems easier to turn when my back is facing the wave

Same here, it's all about body mechanics.

I have more balance with my weight on my heels than with my weight leaning forward on my toes.

I'm the same with a better backside turn than frontside.
I'm natural and mainly surf lefts here so that may account for it slightly, but I'm sure it is easier to turn backside as you have the ability to make minor adjustments to you ballance easier when leaning forwards than when leaning backwards.
When you do a fronside turn you are leaning back and you kind of have to just commit and lean and then wait until the end of the turn to see if you fall off, hard to adjust mid turn.
Backside you can constantly adjust the ammount you bend forward into the turn all the way throuth the turn.

Also when you turn well, you will notice you always look the way you want to go. So backside is easy as you can already see the whole arc, where as frontside its harder to see the whole arc just by turning your head cos you have to turn your whole body to be able to see behind you slightly which is where you need to look.

But I think its more rewarding to do a really good frontside turn, and you need to be more supple to do so. More stretching and loosening up required - yoga stylee! :D Well... for us older gits anyway :( !

well said broosta, with backside, it seems that i have complete control of my board..i have to practice more on my frontside turns since the waves i usually surf breaks right..oh, i do yoga as well, it really helps!

try to do a frontside roundhouse, it's a frontside/backside combo :D
