Surfing Waves

If say a begginer had the right away on a wave would you let him or her have the wave or would you drop in on them thinking that they weren't good enough for the wave?

If its their wave, its their wave. Full stop, end of story.

The only time it would be acceptable to take it is if they're such a beginner that they're going in a straight line towards the beach, 'cos then the more experienced guy can take it as well and plane to the left/right of the newbie who would then be on the white water

But its still their wave.

never drop in on anyone...intentionally...

just remember you were once that bumbling beginner surfer. give him a chance.

Yeah i agree with you guys, but it's still easier said than done... I mean last w/e I had this really nice... And I mean really nice wave coming towards me, but unfortunatly there was a grommet already trying to catch the wave. So I left it, but then he bailed before popping up...

Quite aggravating I must tell you...

If I know that they are a begineer I generally go it and pull out if need be... hate seeing people bail on a perfectly good wave that I could have had fun on

Yeah, I admit I'll sometimes paddle for a wave I dont think they're going to make (particularly if they're paddling for everything, and getting nothing) but sometimes its a bit unfair as they'll see you (er, or me) paddling for it and bail because they havent got the confidence to hold onto whats their wave yet

Hmnn.. never drop in - its the code. If you're on a golf course you wouldn't tee off while a guy is still in the fairway lining up his second shot - technically you COULD.

As for saying they waste good waves - like you're never going to get a wave like it again? There are plenty of good waves, and there will always be.

If someone is really bumbling fool, i'll ask them which way they want to ride, or tell them that you're gonna take it a certain way - that way they know you're getting on it, but shouldn't be afraid to paddle in, coz they know you're going left or right.

Normally I have a chat with so called "begineers" (as opposed to learners as we are continually learning) and explain that I will be paddling and to go it even if I am... when ridding my single fin I am quite happy to share a wave with someone who knows what they are doing... as for begineers, as long as they are on the inside I am happy to be next to them. I much prefer the begineer having right of way, hence unable to drop in on you...

Agree. I was surfing a week ago and this beginner on a bic kept cutting me up , she would go for every wave without looking around her. She didnt catch any waves, she couldnt pop up so it must have been her first time.

But anyway I dont think its right to cut anyone up or drop in on them, if its someones wave then thats it, im happy to let them have it.

i must say i am guilty of dropping in on beginers, not all of the time, but i have done it once or twice, but most of the time they fall of so it doesnt matter as much, but if they start riding the wave i pull out of it.

ya, if the beginner is in position to get the wave, let them try...if they are in your way of the wave, let them go....if you can get around them, then you go. its tough for beginners to control their position in the water - experienced people will have more control and should use proper judgement.

If you were at Shippies the other day...it was beautiful, peeling, headhigh... and this chick on a massive yellow board totally kaned into your wave I'mm soo sorry... I was just fresh and trying to get my pop up quicker...

And combining everything is soo hard a! Don't get me wrong... I DID look... only the guy looked like he was harmless and miles away, and all of a sudden he emerges right by me but I'm just on my drop into my bottom turn and I REALLY REALLY wanted to make it... I did bale out back in time but...

Man that was hard!

I've soo got to get better at calling it right.

Plus I actually love sharing. Maybe it's a longboard thing.. but yea, our crew out there were hard out trying to catch as many waves together as possible. Love it! We had four on a wave once! haaaaa!!! SOOOO much fun!!!

I think we all could get better at just having a lot more fun out there. Your whole mentality changing and cheering the hell up and approaching everything like a total beginner... where you get stoked by such simple things... wow... don't you think we'd all have a better time out there??

And I totally love being around fun people or beginners that are having fun because their stoke is completely contageous a! Don't you feel it hard out too?!

the thing is iam a begginer and on the weekend i was in byron bay and the waves were fairly big for me and there were tonnes of people out there. I paddled out to the line up and just kept out of the way and made sure i didn't get caught on the inside. I didn't have anybody cutting in on me as i didn't try and catch any waves but i stayed out there and was to afraid to try and catch any as they were too many people around me and as iam a begginer and waves were big for me i ended up getting out of there and going down the beach further but it had a strong pull that carries you down the beach further which sucked so i had to get out of the water and start again i did this more than once.

I just wished there weren't so many people otherwise i would of been were they all were and as i don't get to the beach that often it was dissapointing.

But at the end of the day i realised that i had in actual fact caught the best wave that i have ever in my short surfing lifetime so that boosted for the next time.

I know this has nothing much to do with cutting in on begginers but oh well

You can learn a lot by just being out there on days that are at the peak of your abilities. Even if you only caught one or two waves you're still further along than you would have been if you hadn't gone out.

drop in but let them have it if it looks like they can take the face and wont just waste it on whitewash. i drop in on anyone im not sure has the wave or not, but if they end up catching it i pull out, unless someones a hot head people are usually cool with it.

I just feels like don't learn much cause i don't get to surf that often and when i do and theres tonnes of people and bigger waves.

but thanks for the encouragement i do feel that at least i went out and if nothing less it was good paddling practice.

Yea I soo feel ya sis.

Hay where abouts in Auz are ya? Where is some great surf? I'm thinking of moving to Auz and I'd love some head up on where to move.
