There is a local surf comp that I'm thinking about joining. Now there is no chance that i'll win, but i'd like to at least give it a go in the "xxxxx surfers" category  Any tips for not looking like a total retard?

Depends what kind of comp. Don't bring your shortboard to a longboard comp, and vice versa obviously. I wouldn't worry much about it, unless you are a total beginner to which i'll ask "Why are you in a surf competition?".

Well, its just a local comp. There is one every year here just as an excuse to bring the surfing community together.

I don't expect to ride like Curren in it, I just want to do the best I can and training certainly helps that.

I would say to keep it smooth and don't obsess over trying to do great. Just go out and have fun like usual, its better off that way. First off, you had fun, and secondly, you will surf better.

Just go have fun!

Can't loose out if you just boost your general fitness level. Surfing competitions is MUCH more tiring than freesurfing. Just get as fit as you can in time available from now til the comp, then at least you only need to focus on the surfing itself. It should give you a bit of help and you will be healthier regardless. A win:win situation :D !
