WINTER! the surfers kryptonite

Postby orbital » Mon Apr 10, 2006 4:28 am

I hate winter, and being from Eastern Canada I have to deal with some pretty HARSH winters. I'm talking about 46 feet of snowfall in a season.

I'm a beach bum, attracted to sand, water and waves. The winter I go in hybernation and get bummed.

The ice has melted from the water now, and i'm already bummed about thinking of december :(.

I hate cold too (and I live in the subtropics so I can't even imagine a Canadian winter). However, you gotta look at the upside - winter means good winter swells!

No, you don't seem to understand what i'm talking about here. I don't a crap about the cold.. i'll surf in sub temperatures. But I can't physically surf on ICE!!!!!.

ICE = no waves... impossible to surf, worse conditions than FLAT.

People complain about flat surf, well I come from a land where there isn't even WATER to surf on. So yeah, I hate winter and ice. As soon as the ice melts i'm good to go.

I was born on ice skates ha. I'm Canadian!.

But, the water is where i'm at. Hockey/skating/snowboarding isn't near as fun.. the hell with snow, ice and winter.

dude youre lucky i want to snowboard. i want both. it would be cool, if you really hate winter that much, as much as i hate it, it wouldnt hurt (for you) to move to hawaii for a few years. we have a wet season and a dry season. in the winter its raining about half the time where i live, and we can get about 10 inches of rain in a few hours if it gets bad. the difference in temperature ranges from t-shirt and shorts to long pants and maybe a track jacket or hoodie if it gets really cold. too bad you lose fall too. i personally am counting the days until i leave.

Its been argued that surfers from the northen regions, Canada up and UK up are the most hardcore in the world. Interms that their stoke is so high they go out in dire condiotions when its bloody freezing etc...

I think i'm one of the luckier ones, there isn't a time of year or a week goes by where the conditions aren't right for at least one of my favourite pastimes to be enjoyed.
Windy-Go kitesurfing or Kite buggying
Wavey-Go surfing
Snowy-Go Snowboarding/kite Snowboarding
None of the Above-Get the mountain board or long board out
No hills-Go make another surfboard
No Surfboard blanks-Go wakeboarding.
My point is there's always something fun that can be done pretty much wherever you live.

Cheers KS

I've gone out when the harbor and stuff were frozen, but never like the ocean itself with the moving waves and beaches etc. the harbor freezes pretty quickly in the winter it seems simply because it doesn't move. its kinda fun though to walk through the snow to get to the beach. and its neat passing the other cars along the way, all with skis and snowboards on their roofs giving me weird looks with my surfboard on the roof

This is so true. We go out in conditions that no one else will. I get these panzies from NC, and florida and they are like "This is WAY TO COLD even with a wetsuit." And I wouldn't even be wearing a wetsuit ha ha.

I've surfed with ice in the water.

I'm with your surf patrol, the winter in the southern hemisphere is a perfect time for surfing, uncrowded breaks, damn good waves and its so beautiful! Its just getting in/out of the wetsuit that sucks!!
