I've noticed that a lot of times when I lose speed going down the face, my rails or the front of my board (sometimes I move forward to gain more speed) start digging into the water. Any tips on how to stop this.

I think you answered your own question. Don't move so far forward that you start digging in the rail (bogging).
Someone once said that the biggest mistake beginners make is to lean too far farward on the takeoff in a misguided attempt to gain speed.

So moving forward wont help me gain speed? It seems to help, especially if I take off a little early and need a little leverage in the front to get over the lip/

just apply more presure on your front foot, theres no need to move forward unless your getting out of a really fast tube
also try to carve the wave to gain speed (small carves on the face)

pump the board, just keep on pushing your front foot down realy hard again and again.
