Newbie buying board

We don't have any real surf chops around here. Just those proxy surf clothes and boards type shop. And they have a few boards. Do you think they would carry any quality boards and gear?. Should I buy one there or get one online?.

When you say "around here" and don't have your location filled in it's a little hard to help, don't ya think?
