Skimboarding is great fun when the conditions are lame. Only thing is, its expensive just for some lil waves.

But if you can afford it, its awesome!

I wouldn't say its expensive. If you're crafty you can make your own board for next to nothing. I started on a plywood board and moved up to fiberglass over the years. I grew up spending my summers in Rhode Island and the local breaks (walking distance as I didn't have a car back then) didn't break enough to warrant owning a surfboard. So I did a whole lot of skimboarding. It was tons of fun. Now that I surf I clearly enjoy that more. But I'll never look down on skimming. A board shouldn't cost you more than $200 and the beach is usually free. So its not an expensive sport. The boards are also small and flat so you can always keep it in the trunk of your car if you ever feel the sudden need to get wet.

My brother tried skim boarding - he pretty much annihilated his arm doing it. Definately a case of ''first time, last time''.

$200 is for a nice one. A woody will cost you around fifty and can be lots of fun if you're just looking to mess around.

Skimboarding is easily one of the best sports out there. Surfing is good in its own way. Skim boarding is so much fun, especially when you take the time to actually sand skim and just do some spins. as for being expensive, you can get a decent beginner's board for like $20, which will be wood. for $40-$50 you can get a pretty sweet fiberglass one, Sharkskims i prefer, but weight limits are important. i've already broken three cause they are a little fragile. for like anywhere between $150-$500 you can get the legitimate skim boards which you can surf-skim on. That is the only time skim boarding gets expensive. Other than that its awesome, and to be totally honest, $200 bucks for a board that will last you for a long time is not bad at all, especially for something as badass as skimboarding.

I just bought a wooden one at a flea market for $3 a few weeks ago. It doesn't seem damaged or anything but I haven't gotten around to using it yet.

I got a wooden one, and it's fun for shooting up and down the beach when it's flat.

Skimboarding is definitely a young persons sport. I don't think I've ever seen a girl do it and haven't seen anyone over the age of 25. I tried a few times when I was in my late teens /early 20s. Did a split once which hurt like hell (I'm far from flexible even when I was younger). Also banged my legs up numerous times, stump your toes, scrap up yourself when you fall on the sand/shells etc. Its fun but when you are learning you'll definitely takes some bumps, bruises scrapes etc. Then again I cracked my ribs one of the first time I surfed so I guess its all even (and I'm probably a clutz).

Skimboarding is awesome if you get the right board & the right sloping beach and a little swell running. We have some real good beaches for it round here.

Broke my ankle 2 years back though, haven't done it since...

i skimboard when its impossible to surf, i mean real impossible, and i m in my 30. i guess skimboarding is for younger kids bcos of the running which can be quite tiring if you do it non-stop but it is fun when u pull off a long slide or ollie to the wave. But all in all i prefer surfing alot more.
