longboards or shortboards??

This may have been done but I'm really interested to know what board everyone rides? And why?

I've ridden a longboard for the last 13 years and must say I have never been tempted to get on a little matchstick and flap around in the waves. I can paddle out faster, catch waves earlier and more importantly - I can have fun in any size wave that I find.

Give me the laid back, cruisy, graceful style of longboarding any day.

The only shorter boards I'd be tempted with would be a real old school fat, retro fish with a huge vee hacked out of the tail.

i have 2 boards a longer mal for those smaller days, and a shortboard for bigger days, i have been tempted to get a longboard though however they cost an absolute fortune and would not fit in my car

I'm a Mini-Mal man.

I do love longboarding, but like Kieran I have transport issues. I can also only afford one board so I went in the middle. A board that I can get out back on big days and use, but also use on 1 ft days when I'm desperate! (like now)

I spent 8 years thrashing about on a 6'6 needle, so I learned to paddle very hard. When I switched to my 7'5 mini-mal I can now catch waves out where the longboarders are and I can ride mellow or snap hard turns - as the mood takes me! Which is mellow most of the time!!

Cheers

I don't even have a surfboard yet. I've just started skateboarding for the past two months. I just love my longboard so much more than the regular skateboard, maybe it's because I can't do any tricks. But mostly it's because I like the laid back style. Plus my longboard is very flexible, I feel like I'm surfing when I'm just craving the street.

I'll get a 9'4 long surfboard in two weeks. My height is 5'10 and I weight 168 lb. The kind of surfboard would you guys and ladies recommend for a newbie like me?

Thanks!

The right board for the right waves.

Sometimes conditions are better for longboards, sometimes better for shortboards.

I prefer my longboard any time in any conditions, course I am a big boy, 6'4" and 230 lbs, makes a difference... 8)

I learned on a long board, and am still far more comfortable with it, not that I'm not up for new challanges.

i got a 7'3" mini mal but i had a go on a shortboard the other day and loved it and i'm desperate to get one now. conditions were really small so i want to try it on a bigger day, but would you guys recommend me selling my mini mal (bic) or waiting and saving up for another board? thanks!

I have a 8ft 4 for the small-mid sized days which is really fun, and a 6 ft 8 for the bigger days, also depends on the location too, I hate pearling a big board in steep surf and I hate pumping the shortboard in shallow crumbly surf thats bearly strong enough to propell me. I would keep your bic for a while for the shallow or small surf because it is frustrating when your mates are cruising down the line on a minimal and you cant even catch anything on a small board, but then its the other way round when its big and steep.

gotta be longboard allll the way for me.... hands behind back, strolling up the board to hang some pinkies over the nose, smooooooooth.... well, maybe someday soon. At the moment my cross step looks like i'm being electrocuted...
