Hi. I had an ankle injury a few years ago and tore some ligaments, so now I have a weak ankle. I know surfing is a sport that relies heavily on balance that relies on the ankles. Has anyone else here had ankle injuries and had it complicate their surfing? Is a person with an ankle injury vulnerable to further injury on the ocean?

I broke my ankle a few years back on a motorbike. I've got 14 screws and 2 metal plates in my leg which is really painful when my board hits it when I wipe out. But it would never stop me surfing!!! I know a torn ligament is a bit different to a break but I think the thing is to take it easy...you know what you can do on your ankle and what your limits are. Maybe you could try strengthening your ankle somehow....there must be some info on the net.

Ironically I just hurt my ankle yesterday. I hit some random chop in the wave. It hurts man so I know what you are talking about. Im a little worried about re-injuring it as Im sure you are. Like he said, its probably a good idea to rest it and then strengthen it. But yeah, once your body has a weakness it is easier to reinjure that spot, unless you make it stronger than it was before.

Standard bit of advice...
Get an IndoBoard.
That'll strengthen your ankle, and improve your balance
