dawn patrol is the best!! nothing like watching the sunrise while surfing. I haven't done it in the winter though, because I spend the morning driving.

even if the waves suck and I wear my self out for later, I still love it.

I did my first dawn patrol last weekend, got up at 5.30 and was at the beach by 7am, just in time to see the sun peek over the horizon. It was truly breathtaking, not to mention we had awesome waves all to ourselves!! Ill defintely do it again!

i do dawn patrol a couple of days a week - generally i limit myself to 30-60mins, coz it wears me out for work. i agree with above post - watching the sunrise while you're out there is an amazing experience, i still remember the first time i saw it - ahhhh memories... :)

Yeah, my bro in London reckons winter is the pits there.
But the upside is that there are a couple of decent spots there.

Ask Sinista, he'll be able to recommend some decent breaks.

Mind you, it will be nothing compared to what you're used to in J-Bay!

Did you ever do a dawny at pipe or millers?

Miller is my favourite PE spot by miles. Its just such an fun awesome long wave to ride, god I miss that wave right now !!
Pipe, you wont catch me there, hate the place, crap waves and crap crowds.... just to the right of there at Rincon (in front of that beacon thingy) is where it was at, and always bigger for some reason :)

I too found that the crowd at Pipe tend to be vibing to a different tune.

My mates and I hung out at Avalanche. We did Fence (latin name - Wavus Dumpus) a couple of times with it's hollow waves  , so after that we stuck to Avalanche and Millers, where you know the waves are gonna be just fine.

Did you ever notice how relaxed & "friendly" the waves were at Millers? Perfect to have fun all day long.... :D

Hmm, you guys probably don't have a problem with sharks where you surf, because as far as I heard, the sharks are at there best during sunrise and sunset.

But then again, sharks do love 'ol Muizenberg.

Oh and it seems like we have an SA reunion here today :D

Yeah, seems like the Saffers are all over!

PE is relatively safe with it's small sand sharks but we have had a couple of nasties here in EL with the only great white shark double team attack on a surfer - and video taped nogal ! Discovery channel did an expose on that attack.

Also EL's well known Nahoon Reef is a breeding ground for raggies.
Just last month a guy had his leg nibbled on at the reef. Although nothing compares to the horror stories that have cropped on your side didier101!

But normally dawny's are safe in the eastern cape from my personal experience.
